CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Senior forward
David Dempsey (Wallingford, Conn.) led all scorers with 20 points to pace the Gordon College men's basketball team in an 87-46 rout over host Wheelock College this evening on Brunelli Court on the campus of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The Fighting Scots win their fourth straight game to improve to 6-4, while the Wildcats fall to 1-9.
Gordon shot 56.7 (34-60) from the floor, while owning a 49-20 rebounding advantage over Wheelock. The Fighting Scots also held the Wildcats to just 30.9 percent (17-55) from the field for the game.
Gordon scored the first eight points of the game over the opening three minutes of play and never looked back. The Fighting Scots increased their lead to 19-5 at the 13:09 mark, before junior forward Paul Coucci (Dartmouth, Mass.) later drained a three-pointer to pull Wheelock to within 21-11 with 9:52 showing in the opening half. A lay-up from freshman forward Sean Semerjian (Montreal, Quebec) in his collegiate debut cut the deficit to single-digits at 26-18 with 7:42 to play in the half, but Gordon ripped off 10 straight points, led by six from sophomore forward
Hans Miersma (Whitinsville, Mass.), to take a 36-18 cushion with 5:42 showing on the first half clock. The Scots took their largest lead of the half at 48-24 with eight ticks remaining in the half, before sophomore guard Nico Cantu (Kingsburg, Calif.) canned a trifecta to close out the half for the Wildcats to make it 48-27 at halftime.
Gordon began the second stanza the same way as the first with the first eight points to take a 56-27 lead at 16:48 of the period and later took a 68-30 advantage with 9:29 to play in the game, following a 12-3 burst, including eight points from Dempsey. Coucci ended the run for Wheelock with a lay-up as the home team later pulled to within 76-40 with 5:06 left to go. Dempsey later converted a lay-up to give the Fighting Scots their largest lead of the night at 87-44 with 1:28 to play in the contest.
Dempsey was 10-16 from the floor and added five rebounds, two assists and a steal in 24 minutes of action for Gordon, while Miersma posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in addition to an assist and a blocked shot. Sophomore forward

Taylor Bajema (Whitinsville, Mass.) dropped in 11 points to go with three rebounds and a steal.
Senior forward Bashir Hudson (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) led the Wildcats with 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Coucci and Semerjian each finished the night with nine points. Coucci added three assists and a steal, while Semerjian came up with a rebound.
Wheelock will be in action again on Thursday, Jan. 10 when it hosts New England Collegiate Conference foe Daniel Webster College on Brunelli Court at 7:30 p.m., while the Fighting Scots travel to Quincy, Mass. on Jan. 5 for a 3 p.m. tip-off at Eastern Nazarene College.
