Hosting the Nor'easters of the University of New England in their first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest of the new year, the Fighting Scots conceded a 59-50 loss to their previously league-winless guests to drop to 7-5 overall, 2-3 in conference on the season. The Nor'easters pick up their second win overall (2-9) and first in conference (1-3).
Devin Thompson (Fr./Winthrop, Mass.) led all scorers on the night with 21 points for UNE, while Charles Fenner III (Jr./Bronx, N.Y.) contributed 15 points and three steals and Joshua Butler (Jr./Nantucket, Mass.) recorded a 10-point, 15-rebound double-double to in the Nor'easters to the win.
Leading the Scots' effort was
Park Thomas (Jr./Scottsdale, Ariz.) with 11 points and
Jason Dempsey (So./Wallingford, Conn.) with 10 points, while
Taylor Bajema (So./Whitinsville, Mass.) booked nine points and seven boards and
David Dempsey (Sr./Wallingford, Conn.) added eight points, six rebounds, five blocks, and four steals.
Overall on the night the Scots shot 20-of-58 (34.5 percent) with UNE edging them out at 19-54 (35.2 percent).
After taking over the lead, 8-7, on a three-pointer from Thomas less than four minutes into the game, the Scots held on to their advantage for the remainder of the half to head into the locker room up 33-29 behind 10 points from Jason Dempsey.
The second half proved a different story, though, as the Nor'easters quickly closed the gap and took the lead when Fenner netted a three to put them up 38-37 at 16:21. From there Gordon would regain the lead once more before UNE took over for good at the midway point in the half. Gordon's guests closed out the night with a 16-8 run that carried them to the nine-point victory.
The Scots take to the court again on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 7:30p.m. as they play host to CCC foe Roger Williams, while the Nor'easters travel to take on Curry College on the same night also at 7:30p.m
