Salem, Mass. –The Fighting Scots of Gordon College, ranked No.22 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III Men's Soccer National Poll, shutout the Vikings 3-0 at Alumni Field on the campus of Salem State on Tuesday night. Gordon has blanked their last three opponents after a tough loss at Nichols two weeks ago, and the Scots improve to 13-1 on the season. The Vikings falls to 1-11 in 2013.
The Scots started the scoring early when Kellen Kasiguran (Oakwood Village, OH) put an unassisted shot past the goaltender just 2:55 into the game. Despite controlling play for most of the half, Gordon could not extend its lead until Caleb Cole (Coatesville, PA) added an unassisted goal at the 42:46 mark to make it a 2-0 Fighting Scots going into halftime.
Cole corralled a deflected ball in the middle of the field and took two steps to his left before firing a shot on net. Nondas Kargakis was able to get two hands on the shot, but only enough to slow it down. With no defenders behind the play, Cole's ball bounded into the right side of the net for Gordon's second goal.
Gordon continued to pressure Salem State in the second half, but the Vikings stayed in the game, and had a chance to cut into the lead midway through the period. A penalty kick by Salem State should have made the score 2-1, but defending CCC Rookie of the Week Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, PA) made an incredible diving stop. Spoonhour quickly got off the ground to make another diving save on the rebound.
Colten Corey (Highlands Ranch, CO) added an insurance goal in the 69th minute on an assist from Dalton Weaner (Northbridge, MA) to make the final score 3-0. Weaner beat his man down the left side and made a nifty move into the 18-yard box. Corey one-timed the feed from Weaner and sent a laser into the right side of the net for the team's third score.
The Vikings' Kargakis stopped three shots, while Spoonhour (Greencastle, PA) made six saves. Aaron Horton (Douglas, MA) finished the game in net for Gordon in the combined shutout.
Salem State's next game is at Worcester State at 12:00pm on Saturday. The Fighting Scots play again Saturday against Wentworth on their home field at 3:30pm.
