WENHAM, Mass. – For the second straight weekend, Gordon Volleyball swept a home tri-meet. The Scots labored through a four-set match with Daniel Webster College—coming out victorious 3-1—before finishing the day with a 3-0 win against UMass-Dartmouth. Daniel Webster defeated UMass-Darmouth in the middle contest 3-1. The Scots improved to 11-13 on the year and 7-4 while playing on the Bennett Center Court.
From the opening serve, the Scots had the fight for every point against the visiting Eagles. Daniel Webster limited their mistakes and forced Gordon to beat them with well-executed points. The Scots got down early, but rebounded strongly to take the first set 27-25.
Gordon used the confidence built from the narrow first-set victory and cruised in the second set 25-13, in what may have been the best game the Scots have played all season.
Down 2-0, the Eagles made sure they would not be an easy out. Daniel Webster fended off four match points for the Scots and took the third set in entertaining fashion, 34-32.
The Scots refocused in the fourth set, winning 25-20 to pick up their 10
th win of the year.
Samantha Betts (Rancho, Cucamonga, Calif.) finished with a team-high 12 kills for the Eagles, while Ally Hayden (Bedford, N.H.) picked up 18 assists. Madeline Roulier (Pittsfield, Mass.) paced the Eagles' defense with 19 digs.
In the final match of the day, the Scots ousted UMass-Dartmouth in straight sets. Gordon jumped on the Corsairs early and remained in control through the entirety of the match.
Gordon and UMass-Darmouth were tied at 16 points a side in the first set, but Jessica Burdick's (Brewerton, N.Y.) excellent serving made the difference down the stretch. Burdick finished with three aces in the final few points, as the Scots won 9 of the final 10 to take the set 25-17.
The Scots trailed in the second set 13-12, but five straight points won on serves by Jenna Labbadia (Berlin, Conn.) put a good distance between the two teams. Gordon won the second set 25-18. Gordon began the third set with a 11-3 lead and never looked back, winning 25-14 to complete the sweep over the Corsairs.
Christina Spinazola (Midway, Mass.) put up nine assists for the Corsairs, while Brianna Perry (New Bedford, Mass.) and Carina Filosa (Milford, Mass.) each had 12 digs on defense. The loss dropped UMass-Darmouth to 7-17 on the year.
Laura Schmidt (Stuart, Fla.) led the Scots with 20 kills between the two matches. Schmidt's powerful swing has given Gordon a much-needed spark during their recent stretch of games. Schmidt also put up a hitting percentage over .250.
Labbadia was just shy of Schmidt's mark with 19 kills in two matches, while Burdick posted 18 scores of her own. Junior Faith Gerdes (Wall Lake, Iowa) nabbed a season-high 16 kills on the day.
Setter Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, Va.) put up a four-set season-high with 43 assists in the opening match with Daniel Webster. She followed the impressive performance with 28 assists against the Corsairs, for a Saturday total of 71 in two matches.
The Scots also contributed a season-high 24 service aces on the day.
Gordon is back in CCC action on Wednesday with a tough matchup against Western New England at 7 p.m.
