WENHAM, Mass. – Gordon Volleyball ran into one of their toughest tests of the season on Wednesday, losing a three-set match to CCC opponent Western New England. One of the preseason favorites in the CCC, WNE controlled the pace of play early on and never let go with a 25-12, 25-16, 25-15 win over the host Scots.
The Scots (11-14) held close to the Golden Bears (17-7) in the first few points of each set, but WNE's towering net players proved to be the difference in the match. Gordon's largest lead was by five in the second set, but the Golden Bears chipped away at the Scots lead before finally winning the set out right 25-16.
WNE's Kasey Cameron and Devyn Frank led all players with nine kills apiece. Frank's night was especially impressive as the senior posted a .667 hitting percentage from her spot on the front line.
Rachel Meachem (15 assists) and Jenna Leuck (13 assists) split setting duties for the Golden Bears.
Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, Va.) posted a game-high 18 assists for the Scots, while Jenna Labbadia (Berlin, Conn.) led Gordon with six kills on 14 attempts. Faith Gerdes (Wall Lake, Iowa) and Jessica Burdick (Brewerton, N.Y.) contributed five kills each.
The Scots have another tough matchup on Saturday with an away match at Roger Williams. The Hawks currently lead the CCC in the standings and were the preseason favorite.
