Beavers Gnaw Their Way Past Field Hockey 4-1

Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Babson's Morgan Lockwood (Feeding Hills, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and classmate Alex Cabreros (San Diego, Calif.) chipped in with two assists as the Beavers scored four first-half goals en route to a 4-1 win over visiting Gordon on Saturday afternoon.

With its second consecutive victory Babson moves to 10-7 on the year while Gordon, which had its four-game winning streak snapped, is now 13-5.

First-year Victoria Spofford (Merrimac, Mass.) notched a goal and an assist for the Beavers, while junior Caroline Malone (Walpole, Mass.) contributed a goal, and senior Julia Pochini(Acton, Mass.) tacked on an assist in the win.

Spofford gave Babson the lead just 9:32 into the game, converting a tip-pass from Cabreros in front of the net for her first collegiate goal. The Green and White doubled its advantage just 72 seconds later when Malone struck for the 11th time this fall, finishing another feed from Cabreros at the left post to go ahead 2-0.

Lockwood registered the first of her two tallies at the 26:28 mark, beating Gordon senior goalkeeper Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.), who came charging off her line, to give the Beavers a three-goal cushion. Junior Katherine Bailey (Baltimore, Md.) got the Fighting Scots on the board with her sixth goal of the season at 31:20, knocking home her own rebound of a shot saved by Babson senior back Tricia McQuade (Barrington, R.I.), but Lockwood added her second goal just 1:16 before halftime on a blast from just inside the circle to make it 4-1 at the break.

The Beavers, who outshot Gordon 16-8 on the game, held a 6-2 edge in second-half attempts, and had their best opportunity to extend the lead late in the game when Lockwood's shot was denied by Gordon senior back Megan Wernig (Gilford, N.H.).

Senior goalkeeper Kayla Florence (Milton, Mass.) made three stops in just over 55 minutes of action before giving way to sophomore Kayla Costa (Watertown, Mass.), who made one save for Babson. Bury, who played the first 38:46, and first-year Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) each stopped two shots for the Fighting Scots.

Babson will wrap up its regular season next Saturday at MIT in a 1 p.m. start while Gordon will host Nichols in its regular-season finale on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
