BRISTOL, R.I. – The Fighting Scots Men's Soccer team received a go-head goal from senior striker Andrew Vandervoort (Memphis, Tenn.) in the fifth minute and held on for a 1-0 win at Roger Williams. Gordon's sixteenth win of the season puts the Scots in prime position for the top seed in next week's CCC Tournament.
Coming into the day, Gordon and the host Hawks had a combined record of 29-3-1, representing the two of the top three teams in the conference. The two teams also possessed the four top scorers in the league, Vandervoort and Kellen Kasiguran (Oakwood Village, Ohio), and Trevor Hoxsie and James Sheldon for the Hawks.
However, it was the defense that showed its brute force in Saturday's matchup.
Gordon pushed the tempo early and they were rewarded less than five minutes into the game on a strike from Vandervoort. The CCC's leading scorer netted his 15
th of the season on an unassisted blast just inside the 18-yard box. Vandervoort settled a deflection before using one swift motion to give the Scots their first goal of the game.
The Scots' defense frustrated one of the CCC's top offenses, forcing many of their the Hawks' shots to be off balance. Roger Williams (14-3-1) attempted 11 shots over the course of 90 minutes, but freshman goalkeeper Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) only needed to make two saves on the day.
Roger Williams' best chance came with 15 minutes remaining in regulation when the Hawks had a 3-on-2 break. The Scots deflected the initial shot wide before Spoonhour made an incredible sliding save to eliminate the Hawks' attack on the rebound.
Gordon (16-1) had several opportunities to add to their lead in the final 10 minutes, but Hawks' net-minder Jon Pelloso kept his team within striking distance. Pelloso had three saves.
The Scots defense staved off the final wave of attacks from the Hawks' desperate offense to clinch at least No. 2 seed in the CCC Tournament.
No. 13 Gordon finishes their regular season on the road at Endicott on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. The Gulls currently sit sixth in the conference at 3-4.
