Kristina Rubico (Chelmsford, Mass.) hit a solid .265 with a match-high 13 kills on 34 attempts to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-1 win over the Gordon College Fightin' Scots in a non-conference women' s volleyball match Thursday evening at Hill Gymnasium. USM defeated Gordon 20-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-23.
The win is the first for the Huskies in the 15-match series between the two school and improves their record to 14-4 overall. The loss is the fifth straight for Gordon, dropping its record to 6-11 overall.
Rubico reached double-digits for kills for the sixth time this season and added eight digs and a pair of service aces for the Huskies. Freshman
Amanda Keppel (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy) and sophomore
Renee Trottier (Biddeford, Maine) each had eight kills. Trottier added four assist, an ace and six digs, while Keppel had five aces and team-high 16 digs. Freshman
Megan Nilson (Granby, Conn.) had 33 assists to coordinate the Husky attack.
Sophomore Jessica Burdick (Brewerton, N.Y.) and junior Shaylyn Roach (South Weymouth, Mass.) each had seven kills to lead Gordon. Roach had a pair of solo blocks and a block assist. Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) paced the Scots' defense with 16 digs in the match. Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, Va.) added 19 assists on offense.
Southern Maine travels to Salem State for a tri-match with Pine Manor on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). Gordon College travels to Massachusetts Maritime on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.).
