Strong Second Half Powers Field Hockey Past Nichols

Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. – On the road for the first time since a narrow defeat versus No. 16 Wellesley, Gordon used three second-half goals and solid defensive play to get by Nichols 3-0, on the road.
 
Juniors Karli Balmer (Perkasie, Pa.), Courtney Scott (Herndon, Pa.), and Katherine Bailey (Baltimore, Md.) each scored for the Fighting Scots, who improved to 9-3 (4-1 CCC) with the win. They outshot the Bison 22-1 over the final 47 minutes of the contest and finished with a 22-5 advantage.
 
Nichols (2-10, 2-4 CCC) recorded the first four shots of the contest and nearly took a 1-0 lead on junior Victoria Utter's (Stafford Springs, Conn.) shot that was stopped by the toe of senior goalkeeper Anna Bury (Huntington, Md.). The Fighting Scots finally recorded their first shot of the game with 12 minutes remaining in the first, and each team finished the opening 35 minutes with four shots on goal.
 
The Fighting Scots dominated the second half of play and were rewarded with a goal 10:03 into the stanza when Balmer collected a rebound and put it into the top right corner. Scott netted her 18th goal of the season on a breakaway at 66:03 to double the Gordon lead, and Bailey's fifth off a cross crease feed from classmate Grace Fabry (Escondido, Calif.) just over two minutes later sealed the win.
 
Bury finished with four saves to improve to 6-3 with the win. Utter led Nichols with two shots.
 
The Bison return to action on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. contest at Roger Williams. Gordon heads to UNE for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday.
