Scots Hold Off Gulls' Rally to Advance to CCC Championship

Box Score
WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Field Hockey fended off a furious Endicott rally in the second half, beating the Gulls 2-1 to advance to the CCC Championship game on Saturday. The Scots got goals from Brittany Hawkins and Courtney Scott in the first half and held on for the narrow victory.

The Scots got the scoring off the a blazing start when Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H.) rocketed a shot past Lizetta Solarik (Carmel, N.Y.) off of an initial save by the Gulls' keeper. Courtney Scott (Herndon, Pa.) provided the pressure, but it was Hawkins who was able to finish the first score of the game less than two minutes into the half.

Gordon dominated the possession early in the first half, pressuring Solarik with nine first-half shots. The honorable mention keeper was able to save four of the six shots on goal, but the Scots added to their lead just three minutes before the halftime break.

The Gulls crowded their offensive third and when Gordon cleared the ball away from danger, Scott was left alone at the midfield stripe. The CCC Offensive Player of the Year ran onto the cleared ball and stayed far enough ahead of the last defender to create a one-on-one opportunity. Scott skirted her way around Solarik and finished off her 31st goal of the season for the 2-0 lead.

Gordon looked to add another goal to their two-score cushion early in the second half, but their efforts were consistently thwarted by the Gulls' talented defense. Twice the Scots were robbed on perfect shots that were deflected away by the Gulls' defenders.

Despite outshooting the Gulls 15-5 in the second half, Endicott finally got on the board with 12 minutes to play in the game when Mackenzie Hurst (Gilford, N.H.) finished off a pass from Alyssa Clark (Gorham, Maine). Clark found the puck at her feet on a shot that ricocheted off the post and she quickly distributed it to Hurst in front of the goal. Hurst obliged to cut Gordon's lead to one score.

The Scots and Gulls traded good looks at the net in the final minutes, but the Gulls could not find the equalizer, sending the Scots into the conference championship against UNE on Saturday.

Solarik made 14 saves on the afternoon, 10 of which came in the final 35 minutes of play. Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.) picked up her 13th victory of the season in goal, adding four saves on the evening.

Endicott ends their season at 9-12, while the Scots (16-5) turn their sights to UNE—a team who did not suffer a loss in CCC competition this fall.
