In RussMatt Invitational action today in Winter Haven, Fla., Fitchburg State downed the Fighting Scots, 7-2, in a non-conference 1x9 to move Gordon to an even 3-3 overall on the season. The win improves the Falcons to 2-1.
Ben Davidson (Sr./Sterling, Mass.) and
Eric Rinaldi (Fr./Torrington, Conn.) led the effort at the plate for Gordon, as Davidson went 2-for-2 win an RBI and Rinaldi hit 2-for-4 with one RBI. Fitchburg freshman hurler Javier Lozada (New Bedford, Mass.) proved too much on the mound for the Scots, however, as he went seven innings allowing just two runs and seven hits while striking out five for his first collegiate win.
The Falcons were the first to put points on the board on the day when Randy Ortiz Jr. (Sr./Danielson, Conn.) ripped an RBI single in the bottom of the opening frame and then crossed home himself in the third for the 2-0 lead.
After two scoreless innings, the Scots plated the equalizers when Rinaldi RBI tripled to score
Brian Harrington (Sr./Shoreham, N.Y.) and Davidson singled to left to bring in Rinaldi.
From there the matchup belonged to Fitchburg, though, as the Falcons responded in the bottom of the sixth with four runs and added a single tally in the next inning to widen the gap and secure the five-run victory.
The Scots look to bounce back tomorrow as they take on non-conference Sewanee at 3:30p.m.
