Auburndale, FL- In their final day of RussMatt Invitational action, the Fighting Scots swept the Trailblazers of MCLA, taking the opener 8-1 before capturing a commanding 15-8 win in the nightcap. Gordon improves to 5-3 overall while MCLA falls to 1-5.
In the opener, the Scots crossed the plate seven times in the top of the first as Brian Harrington (Sr./Shoreham, N.Y.), Ben Davidson (Sr./Sterling, Mass.), and Stephen Crawford (Sr./Haddon Heights, N.J.) recorded two RBIs each and Carlos Pichardo (So./La Romana, Dominican Republic) booked a single RBI off MCLA starter Ross Miner (Jr./Greenfield, Mass.). Gordon used four hits and three errors in the inning to take control of the lead for the rest of the way, though Miner would settle down after the first to allow just one more run over the next four innings.
Gordon starter Scott Hall (Fr./Weymouth, Mass.) was in command from the mound, breezing through six innings and allowing just four hits and striking out three to earn the win. Harrington finished with three hits as did Eric Rinaldi (Fr./Torrington, Conn.), while the Scots outhit MCLA 13-5 in the contest.
In the nightcap, MCLA jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in their half of the first. Tyler Benoit (So./North Adams, Mass.) and Rory Slattery (So./Pittsfield, Mass.) had RBI singles while a Gordon error and wild pitch allowed two other runs to come across. The Trailblazers would tack on another in the second as Mike Sullivan (So./Wareham, Mass.) doubled home Slayter Aubin (Fr./North Adams, Mass.), who started the frame off with a single.
Gordon rallied against DJ Clark (Jr./Pittsfield, Mass.) and some sloppy defense from the Trailblazers in the bottom of the second, using three hits and three wild pitches to pull even at 6-6 after the frame.
Following a scoreless third, the Scots took control with a three-run fourth off Rinaldi, Harrington, and Alex Potocki (Fr./New Fairfield, Conn.) RBIs.
MCLA would attempt to rally in the sixth as Cody Weaver (Jr./Highland, N.Y.) drove in a pair with a bases-loaded double, Rory Slattery struck out at the hand of Wes Arning (So./Murfreesboro, Tenn.) to end the threat.
Gordon would go on to add six insurance runs in the bottom half of the frame as MCLA committed a pair of costly miscues to put the game out of reach.
John Kanas (Sr./East Moriches, N.Y.) earned the win for Gordon tossing a scoreless fifth. Robert Jutras (Fr./Reedsboro, Vt.) absorbed the loss for MCLA..
The Scots return home to host Emerson on Saturday, March 16 at 1 p.m.
