In their final competition of spring break in Hilton Head, S.C., the Fighting Scots rounded out the season-opening trip with gusto, handing Heidelberg College a 5-4 loss to improve to 2-4 overall on the young season.
Gordon's effort was guided in part by the standout play of
Joe Daugherty (Fr./Norfolk, Va.) and
Mike Olszak (So./Danvers, Mass.), who combined for an 8-5 win over Dan Driscoll (Fr./University Heights, Ohio) and Brandon Lust (Jr./Bucyrus, Ohio) at No. 3 doubles before going on to capture 6-1, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1 wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
With the only doubles win of the day coming from Daugherty and Olszak, the Scots found themselves trailing 2-1 at the start of singles play. Rookie
Zack Hall (Fr./Sugarland, Texas) stepped up once again at No. 1 to cruise to his fifth singles win of the year (5-1 overall) 6-1, 6-3 over Heidelberg's Clifford Goetz (Sr./Oak Harbor, Ohio), while
Richie Armand (Fr./Hempstead, N.Y.) also grabbed a win at No.3, sliding through the first set 6-2 over Matt McDivitt (Jr./Cortland, Ohio) before battling to a 7-5 victory in the second to sweep the match.
Despite Heidelberg's Zachary Schwenning (Jr./Barberton, Ohio) besting
Kenny Gaudio (Jr./Miller Place, N.Y.) at No. 2 (6-2, 6-2) and Dorion Kempf (Jr./Galion, Ohio) doing the same at No. 3 over
Brandon Inkles (Sr./New York, N.Y.) (6-3, 6-3), Daugherty and Olszak's wins were just enough to help the Scots edge their guests for the overall victory.
The Scots return home to host Wentworth in their first conference match of the season on March 23 at 12 p.m.
