Traveling to Towson, Md. to take on the Falcons of Messiah College in non-conference men's lacrosse action today, the Fighting Scots were taken down by their guests, 12-6, to move to 1-4 overall on the season. Messiah improves to an even 2-2 with the victory.
The Falcons' win was led by attackman Kevin Schellenberg (Sr./Hagerstown, Md.) and midfielder Andrew Harris (So./Indianapolis, Ind.) who recorded a hat trick apiece and middie Andrew Johnson (Sr./Westhampton, N.J.) who chipped in a pair. Rounding out the scoring with single tallies were Heath Kupecky (Sr./King of Prussia, Pa.), Nate Nester (Jr./Mechanicsburg, Pa.), Chris Ruger (Fr./willow Street, Pa.), and Ryan Mayer (So./Robbinsville, N.J.), while rookie netminder Brooks Arnold (Fr./Red Lion, Pa.) turned away 15 in his first collegiate win.
Mio Sison (So./Warren, Mich.) and
Jordan Heckelmann (So./Colorado Springs, Colo.) paced Gordon's effort with two goals each, while
Sam Spellman (So./Lewes, Del.) and
Jake Martin (Fr./Watertown, Conn.) contributed one apiece and keepers
Houston Zemanski (Sr./Annapolis, Md.) and
Cody Greenwald (Fr./Albany, N.Y.) combined for 14 saves.
After Gordon came out of the first period trailing by just one (3-2) following Sison and Spellman goals, the Falcons went on a 4-0 run over the course of the second to hold a healthy 7-2 advantage at the half. Despite a much more evenly matched third and fourth periods, however, Messiah's offensive surge in the second stanza proved enough to earn them their second victory of the season.
The Scots return home to take on non-conference Salem State in a rescheduled contest on Monday, March 18 at 4 p.m. The Falcons will also be on the road for their next matchup, traveling to Selinsgrove, Pa. for a non-conference head-to-head with Susquehanna on Wednesday, March 20 at 6:15 p.m.
