Salem, Mass. – Salem State won its third straight to open the season as they defeated the Gordon College Fighting Scots, 13-8, at Alumni Field on Monday afternoon. The game was a rescheduled contest from March 7th. The Vikings are now 3-0 on the season while the Fighting Scots fall to 1-5.
Frank Lento (Salem, Mass) (two goals, four assists) and Ben Melaugh (Billerica, Mass) (three goals, two assists) led the charge as they combined for 11 points to help the Vikings easily dispatch Gordon College.
The Fighting Scots opened the scoring as
Jordan Heckelmann (Colorado Spring, Colo.) netted an unassisted goal on Gordon's first shot attempt of the game. Salem State answered with three straight goals, two by Melaugh, to retake the lead at 3-1. The Scots' J
eremy Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) drew the visitors to within a goal at 3-2 before Salem State scored five unanswered to grab an 8-2 lead at halftime. Nate Staples (Salem, Mass.) gave the Vikings a 4-2 lead at the end of the first before Ryan Savini (Wilmington, Mass.), Lento (two goals), and Melaugh all scored in the second period to give Salem State a six-goal cushion.
Bobby Bourgeois (Billierica, Mass.) and Max Gansenberg (Beverly, Mass.) accounted for the only scoring in the third period as Salem State extended their lead to 10-2 heading into the fourth. Gordon then opened the final period outscoring the home team, 4-1, to pull within 11-6 with 9:11 remaining.
Sam Spellman (Lewes, Del.),
Mio Sison (Warren, Mich.), and Nelson all had scores during the run. However, Kyle Dolan (North Andover, Mass.) quieted the outburst as he took the faceoff and scored uncontested to push the lead to 12-6, which ended any hopes of a Fighting Scots' comeback.
Bourgeois finished with two goals and an assist for the Vikings, while Gansenberg added two goals for Salem State off the bench. Nelson had a hat trick for Gordon, while Sison finished with two goals and
Jake Martin (Watertown, Conn.) a goal and assist.
Dylan Svenson (Billerica, Mass.) made 14 saves in the victory while starter
Cody Greenwald (Albany, N.Y.) had five stops before being relieved by
Houston Zemanski (Annapolis, Md.) (four saves) in the third for the Fighting Scots.
Salem State outshot Gordon 41-36 and had a 35-20 edge in ground balls.
Salem State is in action again on Wednesday at Curry College. Game time is set for 4 p.m. Gordon College is at MIT this Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
