Scots Downed By ECSU In Non-Conference Action, 11-4

Box Score
On the road in Mansfield, Conn. for a non-conference tilt with Eastern Connecticut State University today, the Fighting Scots were denied their first win of the season by the host Warriors, 11-4, to move to 0-3 overall on the season. ECSU improves to an even 1-1 with the victory.

Gordon's effort was paced by sophomore Sam Spellman (Lewes, Del.) with his fifth and sixth goals of the season, sophomore Jordan Heckelmann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) with a goal and an assist, and sophomore Mio Sison (Warren, Mich.) with a single tally. Rookie keeper Cody Greenwald (Albany, N.Y.) is credited with the loss but recorded five saves in 30 minutes of work for the Scots.

ECSU's Tyler Fresen (Jr./Newington, Conn.) had a banner day with five goals to guide the Warriors to their first win, while Mike Devine (Jr./Cheshire, Conn.) added a goal and an assist and Ryan Scott (Fr./Norwalk, Conn.), Trevor Morrissette (Jr./Bedford, N.H.), Zach Thresher (So./Somers, Conn.), Dean Accomando (So./Monroe, Conn.), and Josh Dubinsky (Sr./Woodstock, Conn.) chipped in a goal each and Drew Deane (Sr./Vernon, Conn.) earned the win in the cage with four saves.

The host Warriors were the first to notch a tally on the board when Dubinsky found the back of the net off a Devin Callahan (So./North Kingstown, R.I.) feed less than 20 seconds into the action. That lead was extended to 3-0 after back-to-back unassisted goals midway through the period by Fresen and Scott.

Sison broke Gordon's silence 38 seconds after Scott's goal on an unassisted effort at 4:27 to narrow the gap to 3-1, but the Warriors kept the Scots' attack at bay for the next 31 minutes while going on an 8-0 run of their own to build an 11-1 advantage at 7:25 in the third.

Though Gordon did not allow any more goals on the day and netted three down the stretch (two from Spellman, one from Heckelmann), the mid-game surge by ECSU created too great a deficit for the Scots to overcome, leaving them on the short end of the 11-4 final.

The Scots have one day's rest before hosting non-conference Maine Maritime on Monday, March 4 at 4 p.m. ECSU travels to Wellesley, Mass. to take on Babson on Tuesday, March 5 at 4 p.m.
