Scots Cruise To 16-5 Victory Over NEC

Box Score
The Fighting Scots improved to 4-1 overall on the season with a 16-5 decision over the Pilgrims of New England College in non-conference women's lacrosse action at the Brigham Athletic Complex this evening.

Anna Blomberg (Jr./Simsbury, Conn.) and Jessie Castelline (Concord, Mass.) paced the offense for the Scots with five points apiece, as Blomberg shot 5-6 for five goals and Castelline was a perfect 4-4 for four goals to go with one assist. Abby Illian (So./Hillsdale, N.J.) and Bailey Grinnell (Fr./South Hamilton, Mass.) each found the back of the twice while Stephanie Fitzgerald (Jr./Groveland, Mass.) and Krysti Leach (G.S./Naples, Maine) recorded two points with a goal and an assist each. Alana Woods (Sr./Medford, Mass.) rounded out the scoring with a single tally.

Earning the win in the cage was keeper Danielle Maguire (Jr./Braintree, Mass.) with two saves in 30 minutes of work, while reserve netminders Julianne Kirkpatrick (So./Rochester, N.Y.) and Ani Karabashian (Fr./Ventor, N.J.) split the duty in the second half to preserve the win.

NEC was led by Meredith Merce (Sr./Ocean, N.J.) with two unassisted goals, Eleni Hatsis (Jr./Norwalk, Conn.) with a goal and an assist, and Gabriella Bigos (Fr./Branford, Conn.) and Sarah Merrill (Sr./Dover, N.H.) with single tallies. Keeper Kelly Metz (Jr./Liberty Township, Ohio), who turned away one in 60 minutes, is tagged with the loss.

The Scots took command of the game early as Blomberg opened the day with her first of five off a feed from Olivia Balloveras (So./Freeport, N.Y.) in the first minute of action. Grinnell followed suit just over a minute later after collecting a feed from Jane Dietrich (Jr./West Hartford, Conn.) and beating Metz for the 2-0 advantage. Fitzgerald then registered her two points in the next four minutes, converting a solo effort at 25:02 before serving up Blomberg at 24:51 to make it a 4-0 game.

The Pilgrims broke that run and put themselves on the board at 19:13 when Bigos booked her fifth goal of the season on an unassisted effort to narrow the gap to three. Gordon ran away with the lead from there, however, outscoring NEC 8-1 in the remaining minutes of the first to hold a 12-2 lead at the break.

Despite a more balanced scoreline in the second, the Scots managed the clock and got four security goals (two from Castelline, one each from Woods and Illian) to NEC's three (two from Merce, one from Hatsis) in the second to capture the 11-point home win.

The Scots return to Brigham on Wednesday to welcome conference foe Western New England for a 7 p.m. opening draw. The Pilgrims, now 1-4 on the season, host non-conference Wellesley on Thursday at 4 p.m.
