In Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's tennis action today at Gordon's Brigham Athletic Complex, the Golden Bears of Western New England claimed a pair of doubles wins and four singles matches to hand the host Scots a 6-3 league loss and improve to an even 3-3 in conference (6-8 overall). The Scots drop to 4-11 overall and 1-4 in the CCC with the loss.
Gordon's
Zach Hall (Fr./Sugarland, Texas) and
Kenny Gaudio (Jr./Miller Place, N.Y.) were perfect on the day as Hall took down WNE's Chris Holzinger (Sr./Foster, R.I.) at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, Gaudio topped Alexander Sause (Fr./Cusago, Italy) at No. 2, 6-5, 7-6 (8-6), and the two combined to defeat Holzinger and Pete Lefrancois (So./Marlborough, Mass.) at No. 1 doubles, 8-4.
Despite their best efforts, however, the rest of the day belonged entirely to the Golden Bears, who swept through the remaining singles and doubles matches to claim the overall victory.
WNE's Sause and Andres Otero (Fr./Caracas, Venezuela) teamed up for an 8-4 win over
Richie Armand (Fr./Hempstead, N.Y.) and
Brandon Inkles (Sr./New York, N.Y.) at No. 2 doubles, while John Mindek (So./Willington, Conn.) and Andrew Schnier (Fr./Long Beach, N.Y.) also claimed victory at No. 3 over
Joe Daugherty (Fr./Norfolk, Va.) and
Mike Olszak (So./Danvers, Mass.), 8-2, to give their team the advantage heading into individual competition.
Though Armand battled Shawn Fitzpatrick (Gr./Burnt Hills, N.Y.) to a hard-fought 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 0-1 (3-10) at No. 4 singles, the Golden Bears captured straight-set decisions in the remaining matches to notch their third CCC win.
The Scots return to Brigham on Thursday, April 18 to host the CCC's Eastern Nazarene College at 4 p.m. WNE will travel to Salve Regina on Saturday, April 20 for a 1 p.m. start.
