Gordon starting pitcher
Ryan Block (Fr./Egg Hardbor Township, N.J.) held Bates scoreless through the first two innings before giving way to
Wesley Arning (So./Murfreesboro, Tenn.), the first of seven relief pitchers used by the Fighting Scots. Arning was greeted by a leadoff single by Mekae Hyde, followed by a single by Evan Czopek, a walk to Kevin Kennedy and an RBI single to right field by Rockwell Jackson before he struck out Griff Tewksbury with the bases loaded for the first out of the inning. Bates got two more hits in the inning, a single to left by Ryan Sonberg and a two-run single by Kevin Davis, to emerge with a 4-0 lead.
Gordon got a run back in the fourth as
Eric Rinaldi's (Fr./Torrington, Conn.) leadoff single was misplayed for a two-base error, putting Rinaldi on third.
Alex Potocki (Fr./New Fairfield, Conn.) brought Rinaldi home with an RBI groundout. Bates starting pitcher Chris Ward allowed two more Gordon hitters to reach base but left them stranded.
Ward gave way to Sam Berry, who pitched two shutout innings of relief in earning the victory. Meanwhile Bates added three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to stake Bates' third pitcher, Samuel Warren, to a 9-1 lead as he began the seventh inning. Warren allowed one walk in two no-hit, shutout innings, including three strikeouts. After Bates plated two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, lefthander Tom Baroni pitched the final inning in mopup duty.
Bates' three-run fifth inning featured consecutive singles by Tewksbury and Sonberg, followed by another run-scoring hit by Davis, a double to left field. With Sonberg on third and Davis on second, lefthander
Jared Kefalas (So./Wenham, Mass.) was summoned to face Bates' Kevin McGregor, who poked a single into left field to score both runners for a 7-1 lead.
Mekae Hyde and Sonberg both had three hits for Bates; Davis drove in three runs and Kennedy scored three runs.
Gordon totaled seven hits by seven different hitters, including a double by
Ben Davidson (Sr./Sterling, Mass.).
