Fitzgerald Nets Overtime Game-Winner To Lift Scots Over Roger Williams, 11-10

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Fighting Scots improved to 10-2 overall and 5-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) today with a thrilling 11-10 overtime victory over the Hawks of Roger Williams University today. The loss drops the Hawks to 5-9 overall and 3-4 in the CCC.

The Hawks opened the scoring at 27:49 when Kelsey Rahilly (East Longmeadow, Mass.) took a pass from Lauren Piotrowski (Wakefield, Mass.). Less than a minute later Samantha Davenport (Bethel, Conn.) put the second goal on net to give the Hawks an early 2-0 lead.

Stephanie Fitzgerald (Groveland, Mass.) drove toward the goal and finished at 26:43 to put the Fighting Scots on the board. At 24:55 Jane Dietrich (West Hartford, Conn.) leveled the game for Gordon at 2-2.

At 23:15 the Hawks took a 3-2 lead when Rahilly from behind the goal found Devin Machette (Norwalk, Conn.) cutting from the left wing to the front of the goal.

Kristen Pingree (Georgetown, Mass.) added a goal on a free position attempt at 19:40 to give the Hawks a two goal lead 4-2. Anna Blomberg (Simsbury, Conn.) scored on an unassisted attempt at 18:31 to answer for Gordon (4-3).

Alana Woods (Medford, Mass.) scored three unassisted goals at 5:31, 3:51, and 00:28 to give Gordon the lead heading into the halftime break.

At 25:34 Rahilly found a cutting Pingree for the first score after the break to bring the game back to an even 6-6 score. Jessica Searl (Glastonbury, Conn.) regained the lead for the Hawks netting her first of the day at 24:13 and putting the score at 7-6.

Jessica Castelline (Concord, Mass.) finished on the mark for Gordon at 17:31 to level the game back to even, 7-7.

Dietrich pushed into the crease and finished under pressure at 13:41 to put the Fighting Scots back in the lead.

Just over a minute later Machette took a ball in midfield and slashed to the goal to finish at 13:21 and bring the score to 8-8.

Woods connected with Fitzgerald to put Gordon up by a goal with 11:52 to play and Searl finished a free position attempt in the bottom left corner at 9:40 to bring it back to all square and conclude the scoring in regulation.

In overtime Fitzgerald beat her defender to the front of the goal for her third of the game to give Gordon the lead, 10-9.

With 1:14 left in the overtime Machette pushed the ball up the field and dished to Rahilly for the score.

Fitzgerald then took the draw control straight to the goal and fired for the deciding tally at 1:02, just 12 seconds after the Hawks had tied the game.

Justine Sullivan (Norwell, Mass.) saved 14 shots in goal for the loss while her counterpart Danielle Maguire (Braintree, Mass.) stopped 12 shots in the win.

The Fighting Scots travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on the Lancers of WSU Thursday, April 18 at 7 p.m.

The Hawks remain at home to take on Wentworth in more CCC play on Saturday, April 20 at 3:30 p.m. in Bristol, R.I.
