Blomberg Nets Seven To Lead Scots Past Curry, 14-7

Box Score
MILTON, Mass. – Junior midfielder Anna Blomberg (Simsbury, Conn.) netted seven goals and dished one assist to lead the Fighting Scots to a 14-7 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) win over host Curry College tonight in women's lacrosse action at Walter M. Katz Field. With the win the Scots improve to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in conference, while the Colonels fall to 7-3 overall and 0-2 in the CCC.

Gordon freshman Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) netted three and assisted on one, while CCC Rookie of the Week Jessie Castelline (Fr./Concord, Mass.) had a solid night with four points on two goals and two assists. Junior Jane Dietrich (West Hartford, Conn.) had three points on one goal and two helpers and sophomore Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) netted a goal.

Earning the win in the cage for Gordon was junior keeper Danielle Maguire (Braintree, Mass.) with 11 saves.

For Curry, senior Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.) led her team with four points on four goals and sophomore netminder Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.) made nine stops in the loss.

The Colonels juniors Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.), Kaitlin Cloutier (Montpelier, Vt.) and Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) each chipped in with one.  Brickey and Cloutier and freshman Emma Bolton (Saddle River, N.J.) helped with an assist.

The Scots jumped out to an early lead just 42 seconds into the contest when Castelline received and finished a pass from Dietrich. The Colonels answered back minutes later off an unassisted goal by Bottary. Over the next two minutes the teams traded scores, Blomberg fired first while Carey retaliated with her lone net of the night. Gordon took back the lead after Blomberg and Grinnell each tallied one 23 seconds apart from each other, but  Bottary was quick to answer and cut the deficit to one with 11:07 showing on the clock. At 6:17 Grinnell put her team up 5-3 on an unassisted man-up effort, but two back-to-back goals by Curry’s Brickey and Bottary sent the squads into the break tied at five.

The second half proved to be all Gordon as the visiting Scots outscored their hosts 9-2 overall in the frame. Gordon came out strong to net the first six scores in the opening 10 minutes. Curry called a time out to spark some Colonel action and Cloutier was able to earn her team’s sixth goal on the night.  Gordon, however, did not back down as they went on another scoring frenzy, tallying the next three to round out their night at 14. Bottary earned her third of the game and the team’s seventh with 1:45 remaining to play, but that was as close as they would get as the Scots burned up the clock in the final minutes to book the seven-point win.

Curry returns to play on Saturday, April 6 as they travel for a CCC duel with Roger Williams at 1 p.m. Gordon will travel to non-conference opponent Wheaton College on Tuesday, April 4 for a 4 p.m. start.
