Scots Halt Skid With 13-10 Win Over Curry

MILTON, Mass. – In a conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon, Curry College lost to visiting Gordon College, 13-10. With the win the Fighting Scots improve to 2-8 overall and 1-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Colonels fell to 7-3 overall, and 0-2 in the CCC. 

For Curry, sophomore John Castellano (Scarsdale, N.Y.) led his team with six points on four goals and two assists. Gordon's freshman Jake Martin (Watertown, Conn.) led his team with six points on five goals and one helper.

The Colonels senior Joseph Natale (Haverhill, Mass.) netted three goals while sophomores Sean Ahern (Natick, Mass.) added one and was credited with an assist. Curry also got scores from Connor McKeon (Larchmont, N.Y.) and Ronald Jensen (Zionsville Ind.). The Scots' sophomores Mio Sison (Warren, Mich.) and Matt Dantona (Syosset, N.Y.) each enjoyed a solid afternoon earning five points, Sison with four goals, one assist and Dantona with two goals, three assists. Sophomore Jordan Heckelmann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had one goal and two assists and freshman Roger Evans (Oxford, Pa.) rounded out the scoring for Gordon with one.

Earning the win in the cage for Gordon was freshman keeper Cody Greenwald (Albany, N.Y), who made nine saves allowing just three goals in 30 minutes of play. Greenwald replaced senior Houston Zemanski (Annapolis, Md.) who started the game and gave up seven goals, making eight stops. Curry played three goaltenders in the contest. Senior Tim McGonagle (Concord, Mass.) played 36:20 minutes in net, allowing nine goals and made eight saves. Freshman Timothy McNair (Wilmette, Ill.) played 13:02 minutes, giving up four goals while making two saves. Senior Thomas D’Amato (West Simsbury, Conn.) finished out the game playing in net for 10:38 minutes. D’Amato had no goals allowed and made one save.  

The Colonels were the first to get on the board two minutes into the opening frame on an unassisted Castellano goal. The Scots fired back just 43 seconds later when Sison connected with Dantona. Gordon took a 3-1 lead after back-to-back tallies from Martin and Sison. Curry netted the last three in the quarter to go up 4-3 heading into the second off nets by McKeon and Castellano and Jensen. 

The Colonels jumped out to a 6-3 lead netting the first three goals in the second quarter. Curry’s Castellano had two on the run while Natale earned one of his own.  Martin scored next for his team but Natale answered back less than a minute later. The Scots would get one more to come within two of the Colonels before the break when Dantano scored 12 seconds after Natale.

Gordon took control of the third frame outscoring Curry 4-0 and regaining the lead. Sison had two and Martin and Heckelmann each had one. The Colonels came within one after Castellano netted his final goal of the game but that would be the closest Curry would get. The Scots scored four more over the next three minutes to make it 13-8. Martin tallied two and Evans and Sison put away one. The Colonels closed out the game with the last two goals from Natale and Ahern. With three minutes remaining in the game, Gordon was able to hold possession and run the time out for the 13-10 win.  

Curry returns to play on Saturday, April 6 as they travel for a CCC duel with Roger Williams at 3:30 p.m. Gordon will travel to conference opponent Wentworth on Saturday, April 6 for a 3:00 p.m. game start.
