BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott men's tennis snapped a two-match losing streak in their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) schedule as the Gulls defeated North Shore Cup and league rival Gordon 7-2 at the South Campus Courts on Thursday afternoon.
Endicott returned to .500 on the season at 5-5 overall and won their first conference match of the season to move to 1-2 against CCC opponents. The Blue and Green take on Salve Regina on Accepted Students Day, Saturday, April 6 starting at 12 pm. Gordon dropped their third straight match to fall to 3-8 (1-3 CCC) and will visit Johnson & Wales (R.I.) in non-conference action on Monday at 4:00 pm.
After senior Benjamin Randlett (Middlebury, Vt.) and sophomore Eric Gandrup (Sudbury, Mass.) handed their No. 2 doubles opponents an 8-1 defeat to put Endicott up 1-0, the Gulls needed to battle through the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles flights to take a 3-0 overall lead.
Seniors Olivier Joggi (Stoneham, Mass.) and Jake Cohen (Barrington, R.I.) trailed 5-1 in the top doubles match to the Gordon duo of Zach Hall (Sugarland, Texas) and Kenny Gaudio (Miller Place, N.Y.) but fought back to win 9-7. Sophomores Timothy Forance (Natick, Mass.) and Mike Lauretano (Winchester, Mass.) also needed a late surge to beat their No. 3 doubles opposition Joe Daugherty (Norfolk, Va.) and Mike Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) 8-6.
In singles play, the Blue and Green took four of the six matches including the fourth and fifth positions to get to five points. Forance won 6-2, 6-0 in No. 4 singles followed by freshman Michael Dolph's (Stratford, Conn.) 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 singles position to take the 5-1 lead.
Endicott also registered wins at No. 3 singles behind a three-set by Lauretano and No. 6 singles with Justin Warshavsky (East Hartford, Conn.) winning in straight sets.
The Scots saw their top two singles players, Hall and Gaudio, claim the only two points for Gordon as Hall won 6-0, 6-1 over Joggi and Gaudio dropped his first set to Cohen before taking the final two sets 6-1 and 10-6.
