Box Score
Behind a five-run second inning, the Fighting Scots stopped a three-game skid with a 6-3 win over the visiting Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth in non-conference baseball action today at Gordon's J. Tec White Field.
Carlos Pichardo (La Romana, Dominican Republic) and
Brian Harrington (Sr./Shoreham, N.Y.) recorded each of the five RBIs in the second for the Scots, three for Pichardo and two for Harrington, while
Dillon Coleman (Sr./Cromwell, Conn.) booked the Scots' remaining RBI. Earning his first win on the hill was
Ryan Block (Fr./Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), who allowed three runs and four hits in 6.1 innings pitched.
Alex Newton (So./Saco, Maine) paced the Corsairs' effort going 2-4 with two RBIs, while Taylor Cacciola (Fr./West Greenwich, R.I.) added the only other RBI for UMD and Joshua Tombs (Fr./Kingstown, R.I.) conceded the loss after giving up six earned runs in a full three innings of work.
UMD struck first on the day as Newton hit a two-RBI single to bring in George Aggostini (So./Dighton, Mass.) and Wayne Bolz (Jr./Billerica, Mass.) for the early 2-0 lead. Gordon responded loudly, though, in the bottom of the second when Pichardo ripped a three-RBI double and Harrington a two-RBI single to overtake the lead, 5-2.
After sitting the Corsairs' offense down with a turned double play and a strike out from Block in the top of three, Coleman added one for insurance in the bottom half off a sac fly to center to plate
Alex German (So./Brimfield, Ill.) and extend the Scots' advantage to four runs.
And though Cacciola would inch his team closer with a sac fly to center to bring in Nate Farias (So./Fall River, Mass.) from third in the top of the seventh, that proved as close as UMD would get as the Scots' defense and pitching buckled down to close out the three-run win.
The Scots, now 13-8 overall, return to the diamond tomorrow for a non-conference 1x9 at Williams beginning at 4 p.m. The Corsairs also return to action tomorrow, traveling to Salve Regina for a 6 p.m. start.
