Box Score
WENHAM, Mass. – For 75 minutes Gordon and UMass-Boston traded good looks at the net, but the Scots finally broke through for two goals in the final 15 minutes to steal a 2-0 victory over the Beacons. The keepers were the story for much of the game, but Evan Crocker (Akron, Ohio) and Kellen Kasiguran (Oakwood Village, Ohio) added scores within two minutes of each other to send Gordon to their fourth straight victory to start the season.
The Scots owned possession for a huge portion of the first 10 minutes of the game and pressured the Beacons' keeper Alfonso Rosales into some tough saves. Rosales was the Beacons' MVP for much of the night—going toe-to-toe with Gordon keeper Tim Hardy (Gorham, Maine) in a competition for who could turn in the most difficult save.
The two teams each had several good looks in the first half, but neither offense could break through the stone walls in net. The score remained 0-0 at halftime.
UMass-Boston came out of the break as the aggressor on offense and quickly put the Scots' defense on its heels. Whatever momentum Gordon had in the first half evaporated as the Beacons controlled the ball in their offensive half for the first third of the second period.
UMB's Marcus Pizzetti nearly curled the ball over the top of Hardy not once, but twice in a five-minute span, which would have ended the scoreless stalemate.
In the 75
th minute, Kasiguran lined up for a corner kick near the Gordon bench and sent a rocket into the fray just feet away from Rosales' post. Crocker was able to get a touch on the hot pass, sending it past the Beacons' defense and into the net for a 1-0 lead.
The goal took the air out of the Beacons' (3-2) sails as a minute and a half later, Kasiguran added a goal of his own on a free kick from 30 yards away. The senior midfielder curved a ball with his left foot past the outstretched hand of Rosales, hitting the bottom of the crossbar and bounding into the twine for Gordon's second goal of the night.
UMass-Boston would not threaten the Gordon lead in the final 10 minutes as the Scots hunkered down in their defensive half to preserve the win.
Rosales and Hardy each finished with five saves on the night—none of which were easy to make.
Gordon (4-0) is back on the pitch on Saturday for the first conference game of the season against Western New England. The Scots will be home for the matchup at 7:00 p.m. at the Brigham Complex.
