Second-Half Offense Leads Scots Past Clark

Box Score
WORCESTER, Mass– After one half of play, Gordon and Clark University were tied at one goal apiece. However, an offensive explosion in the second half led by Andrew Vandervoort sent the Scots to a 6-1 victory to keep their undefeated streak alive.

Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) and Vandervoort (Memphis, Tenn.) played huge roles in the win, with Cole racking up three assists and Vandervoort registering a hat-trick.

The win for the Fighting Scots extends their season-opening win streak to six games, while the Cougars have now dropped back-to-back games by a combined score of 11-1 with those two teams having an overall record of 11-0.

Evan Crocker (Akron, Ohio) got the scoring started when he took a pass up the right side from Cole and fired a long ball towards Clark keeper Robert Bischof (Tarrytown, N.Y.). Bischof, who was looking straight into the sun, lost sight of the ball and Gordon had a 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the game.

Clark answered back less than a minute later, as Vinny Morra (Setauket, N.Y.) had his shot turned back by Tim Hardy (Gorham, Maine) but Nate Biedak (Taunton, Mass.) was there to pounce on the rebound to even the score.

No other goals came in the final 41 minutes of first half action, but they started coming almost immediately in the second half. Cole setup Vandervoort's first goal of the game exactly two minutes into the second stanza, and then less than seven minutes later, that combination connected again for a 3-1 Gordon advantage.

Vandervoort completed the hat-trick with his third goal in a 13-minute span, when he recorded an unassisted tally at 60:21.

For the second-time in as many games, the Gordon senior forward contributed the game-winning goal. Vandervoort now has five on the season and four in the last two games alone. He has led the Scots in goals in each of the last three seasons.

Four minutes later the Fighting Scots were at it again, this time it was Andy Guthrie (Beaver Falls, Pa.), who scored his goal on a free kick and then Kellen Kasiguran (Oakwood Village, Ohio) got in on the act, notching his team-leading sixth marker of the season when he was left unmarked at the top of the box in the 68th minute.

Gordon held a 21-12 edge in shots (11-4 in shots on goal), including a 12-3 advantage in the final 45 minutes.

Clark (2-3-1) will look to snap its current two-game losing streak when it plays host to WPI on Saturday in its NEWMAC opener, while the Fighting Scots (6-0) host Salve Regina on Saturday as well.
