Box Score 2 CASTLETON, Vt.—A weekend trip to Vermont was just what the Gordon Volleyball team needed to get back on track. The Scots secured a 3-1 victory against host Castleton State in their first match of the day, before rolling to a 3-0 win over Green Mountain to improve to 6-6 on the year.
Castleton played arguably its best set of the year—taking down Gordon 25-20 in the opening set. The Spartans then opened the second set with a 12-9 lead and was even on the verge of victory at 24-23. However, the Fighting Scots scored the final three points to finish with the 26-24 win.
In the third set, Castleton jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held the advantage until Gordon eventually tied it up 15-15. The Fighting Scots started to pull away and sat just a point away from victory at 24-21; however, a Gordon service error and consecutive attack errors tied it up at 24. The teams went traded points before two straight by the Fighting Scots gave them the 27-25 win.
The Spartans opened the fourth set strong, 7-3, but couldn't maintain the advantage and Gordon eventually came back for the 25-19 victory.
Jessica Burdick led Gordon with 14 kills and seven digs while Chelsie Clemens was second on the team with seven kills. Lauren Kranyak recorded a double-double with 35 assists and 13 digs.
After winning their first match of the day against the host Spartans, Gordon notched another victory with a 3-0 win against Green Mountain College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference volleyball action at Spartan Athletic Complex.
Gordon (6-6, 0-1 CCC) was powered by Laura Schmidt, Shaylyn Roach, and Chelsie Clemens. The attacking trio all recorded six kills while hitting over .400 from the floor with Clemens adding four service aces on the afternoon. Setter Lauren Kranyak assisted on a match-high 28 kills while Maggie Risma and Joy Kimmel posted 13 and 11 digs, respectively on the defensive end of the match.
Green Mountain (2-7) was led by Kara Egan who tallied six kills, nine digs and four service aces. Madison Wage recorded four kills and seven digs while libero Celeste Bowers dug up eight attacks defensively.
The Eagles will head back to Castleton this coming Friday for their next match against the Spartans, with the game time set for 6 pm. The Fighting Scots will take to the road once again to battle conference opponent Wentworth on Tuesday at 7 pm.
