Quick Start Lifts Field Hockey to 3-1 Win over Golden Bears

Box Score
WENHAM, Mass. – The Fighting Scots Field Hockey team improved to 2-1 in conference play and 6-2 overall with home win over Western New England. The Scots scored three goals early in the first half to set the tone and did not allow a goal until the final minutes of play—as Gordon downed the Golden Bears 3-1 at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

Gordon controlled the tempo of the game from the opening whistle. The Scots peppered WNE keeper Emily Arnold within a minute of the game beginning and the offensive attack did not subside until the halftime break.

Defender Sarah Shannon (Chatham, N.J.) scored the first goal of the game in the third minute off of a pass by Karli Balmer (Perkasie, Pa.). Balmer received the ball from Shannon off of a penalty corner and delivered it right back for the easy score.
The goal was Shannon's second of the season.

Only a minute later, Gordon was back on the offensive. Once again, Balmer controlled the ball in the middle of the crease and distributed it to forward Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H.) just in front of the net.

Hawkins was already wound up for a shot and delivered a strike into the goal box—ending with a loud thud against the back wall of the box—to make the score 2-0.

The Scots continued to control possession over the next 20 minutes, but failed to capitalize on any of their opportunities until the 22nd minute.

Courtney Scott added her 14th goal of the season—which leads the CCC—off of a ball that deflected away from Arnold's pads.

Gordon led 3-0 at halftime and did not allow a shot on goal in the first half.

The Scots played more of a defensive game in the second half, although they did have several opportunities to pad their three-goal lead over the Golden Bears.

Western New England (1-6, 0-3 CCC) countered in the second half with some offense of their own, but their efforts were fruitless until the final minute of regulation. Jaynie Mueller scored her first goal of the year to cut Scots' lead to two with 28 seconds to play, but it was too late to complete a comeback.

Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.) earned her fifth win of the season in net, but did not see a shot during the only half in which she played.

Gordon looks to draw their win streak to three games tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Regis College for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off. Western New England returns home for a non-conference matchup with Clark on Thursday.
