WENHAM, Mass. – Gordon junior Courtney Scott (Herndon, Pa.) scored twice for the Fighting Scots to lift her team to a 3-0 Homecoming win over the visiting Gulls of Endicott College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey action today at Gordon's Brigham Athletic Complex. The win, which improves Gordon to 8-2 overall (3-1 CCC), marks the first time the Scots have bested their crosstown rival since 2007. Endicott falls to 5-5 (2-1 CCC) with the loss.
The Scots put the Gulls on their heels from the outset of the match. Gordon forced 14 shots in the first frame, keeping senior goalkeeper Lizetta Solarik (Carmel, N.Y.) and her defensive unit very busy. Junior Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H.) started the scoring early for Gordon at 5:26 when she received a feed from Scott and found the back of the net to put the Scots on the board.
The Blue and Green worked to try and create opportunities in transition but the Scots shut them down. At 23:45 Gordon was awarded a corner which set Scott up to tally her first goal of the game. Junior Grace Fabry (Escondido, Calif.) received the pass on the play and found Scott sitting on the left post, where she slipped it past Solarik to make it a two-goal game.Â
Less than 10 minutes later, Scott broke free on the left side and blasted the ball from the top of the circle past Solarik to widen the gap to three goals. Solarik made 10 saves on the half, while sophomore Kristen O'Brien (New Boston, N.H.) tallied her third defensive save of the season.
Gordon led the Gulls in shots 14-7 in the second frame but Endicott's defense remained steady. Solarik only saw two shots on goal in the half, both of which she deflected, while her counterpart, Gordon senior goalkeeper Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.), also stopped the two that came her way.
With neither team able to notch another tally, the Scots closed out the matchup with the 3-0 shutout win.
Bury recorded six saves in the cage for the Scots while Solarik turned away 11 in the loss.
With her continued offensive dominance today, Scott remains the leading scorer in the CCC with 16 tallies on the year.
The Scots take a break from conference play on Wednesday as they play host to Wellesley for a 7 p.m. start. The Gulls are also back at it on Wednesday when they travel to Seahawk territory to face Salve Regina at 7 p.m. in a CCC matchup.
