Scots Showcase Offensive Might in 6-1 Win over Lions

Box Score
WENHAM, Mass.—The Gordon Men's Soccer team found the net early and often against the visiting Lions of Eastern Nazarene College, as the offense pulled the Scots to a 6-1 victory. An impressive Homecoming cheering section aided the Scots to their ninth straight win to begin the 2013 season, while Andrew Vandervoort (Memphis, Tenn.) continued his hot streak.

Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) kicked off the scoring early for the Scots, putting away a simple pass from Evan Crocker (Akron, Ohio) in the third minute. Crocker juked his defender and led Cole about 10 yards away fro the easy goal.

Colten Corey (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) made it 2-0 in the 10th minute on a beautiful header. Kellen Kasiguran (Oakwood Village, Ohio) found Corey on the inside post off of a corner kick and the freshman buried it for the two-goal lead.

The Lions defense held strong for the remainder of the half as the two teams entered the break with the score 2-0 in Gordon's favor.

Senior forward, Vandervoort, continued his strong play, finding the net twice in 58th and 67th minutes. The forward now has 10 goals in the team's last six games, which accounts for all of his goals on the year.

The Lions got a score back in the 76th minute on a penalty kick. Gordon committed a strong foul from behind in the 18-yard box, which gave Jacob Mason the chance for their first goal. Backup keeper Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) almost made contact with the ball, but Mason slammed home the shot to make it a 4-1 game.

Freshman Grant Stevens (Trumbull, Conn.) finished his first goal of the season, chipping the ball over a diving Jake Johnson. Corey added his second goal of the game late in the period to finalize the scoring at 6-1. Daniel Perez (Bedford, Mass.) added assists on both late goals.

Evan Crocker finished with two assists as well, his first two of the season. Cole notched his sixth assist of the year, which leads the team.

Johnson finished with seven saves in the losing effort. The junior keeper kept the Scots out of the net during several instances where it looked to be sure goals for Gordon.  Tim Hardy (Gorham, Maine) earned his ninth win of the year and made two saves in 70 minutes of work.

The Scots are back on the road on Tuesday with an out of conference match with Lasell (7-1) for a 4:00 p.m. kick off. ENC travels to Roger Williams next Saturday for a CCC showdown.
