Field Hockey Rallies for 5-4 Win Over Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine  –  Junior Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H./Plymouth Regional) scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in the final 20 minutes of regulation to lead the Gordon College Scots to a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Thursday afternoon at Hannaford Field in Gorham, Maine.

Led by Natalie Harkins and Peyton Dostie, the Huskies held a considerable 4-1 advantage at the half.  Harkins gave the Huskies' an early 1-0 advantage tallying a goal in the fourth minute.  Scott pulled Gordon even with USM in the 12th minute off of a helper from Hawkins, before the Huskies' ran off three goals.  Dostie scored the first of her two goals on a through ball from Harkins in the 21st minute and Harkins followed with an unassisted tally in the 23rd minute for a 3-1 advantage. Dostie closed out the first-half scoring with an unassisted strike in the 29th minute. USM held an 11-4 advantage in shots in the opening half.

As much as the game was controlled by the Huskies (2-1) in the first half, the Scots controlled the game in the second stanza. The Scots, thanks in part to an outstanding defensive effort, outshot the Huskies 9-1 and scored the first of their four second-half goals in the 42nd minute.  Courtney Scott led the charge on an assist from Hawkins and then netted an unassisted goal in the 47th minute to trim the USM advantage to 4-3.  

Hawkins broke through for the game-tying goal in the 54th, collecting a loose ball in from of the cage. Hawkins then delivered the game for the Scots in the 64th minute completing a nifty give-and-go from Scott for the winner.Hawkins finished the game with two goals and two assists, while junior Scott (Herndon, Penn.) racked up the first hat trick of her young Gordon career and added an assist. 

Southern Maine senior Harkins (Windham, Maine) had two goals and an assist, while junior forward Dostie (Standish, Maine) added a pair of goals.  Dostie now has four goals on the season, while Harkins has three.

Gordon freshman goalkeeper Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) earned the win in relief of starter Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.).  Hicks did not allow a goal in the final 35 minutes of action.  Bury allowed four goals and made five saves in the first half. Southern Maine freshman goalkeeper Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine) made five saves in the loss. 

The Scots have their first official home match of the year on Monday afternoon when they take on local rival Salem State at 4 p.m.
