Scots Drop Five Set Thriller to Colby at Colby Invitational

Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine – The Gordon Volleyball team entered Friday night's matchup with Colby College undefeated, but they got their first real test of the season with a talented Mules' squad. Gordon led 2-1 after three sets, but the Mules fought back to grind out a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the visiting Scots.

The Scots dropped the first set narrowly 23-25 to set the pace for the closely contested matchup. Gordon would battle back to take the next two sets 25-16 and 25-23 leaving only set necessary to clinch their fourth straight win to begin the season.

Colby would have none of that in their home opener. The Mules squeaked by the Scots in the fourth set 25-21 to set up a winner-take-all fifth game in the first match of the Colby Invitational.

The Mules got on a roll early in the set and pulled away late for the clinching 15-8 victory in the fifth game.

Kim Donaldson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had 11 kills and seven blocks and teammate Sarah Arvidson (Andover, Mass.) finished with 11 kills and 13 defensive digs in her first collegiate match after missing last year due to injury. First-year Karolina Serhan (Needham, Mass.) also played well in her debut, smacking nine kills and three blocks.

Colby received solid work from both of its setters. Kate Pleasants (Virginia Beach, Va.) had 26 assists, 12 digs, and three aces. Meanwhile, fellow captain Ellie LInden (Andover, Conn.) had 14 assists. Natalie Roy (Los Altos, Calif.) led the way in digs with 21 and ripped six kills, Anna Clifford (Oakhum, Mass.) contributed 18 digs, and Kate Bellerose (West Newton, Mass.) had five kills.

Gordon (3-1 overall) had nine kills apiece from Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, Va.), Jessica Burdick (Brewerton, N.Y.), and Chelsie Clemens (Santa Barbara, Calif.) in the losing effort.

Maggie Rimsa (Hudson, Ohio) chipped in with 10 digs and had three aces for Gordon. Jenna Labbadia (Berlin, Conn.) finished with six kills and Krystal Vander Ark (Santa Barbara, Calif.) had six digs.

Gordon faces Maine Maritime at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning and then meets Smith at noon on day two of the Colby Invite.
