BANGOR, Maine -- The Gordon College Fighting Scots and the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners battled in the championship of the 2013 New Balance Challenge Cup at Husson University's Boucher Field on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams were looking for their second win in as many days, as Gordon defeated Husson 4-1 on Friday night while MMA took down the University of Southern Maine 4-0.
The first half was uneventful, as neither team was able to break the seal. Maine Maritime (1-2-1) managed just two shots in the first 45 minutes, while Gordon (3-0) produced seven.
It wasn't until the 30:41 mark of the second half when Gordon would finally break through.
Trevor Hinshaw (San Jose, Calif.) made a great run up field for the Scots, and was able to pull MMA goalkeeper Jesse Perkins out of the box. Hinshaw then flicked over to Andy Guthrie (Beaver Falls, Pa), who was able to slip the ball past Perkins with his right foot to give Gordon a 1-0 advantage.
The Mariners tried to answer back less than a minute later, as they pushed the ball quickly down field. Kyle Haslam let off a shot that ringed off the post, and the rebound came down on the foot of Nicholas George. He tried for a quick put-back shot, but Gordon goalkeeper Tim Hardy (Gorham, Maine) made a dazzling save diving to his right. The ball would squirt away from Hardy momentarily, and George found himself with yet another attempt. He tried for a shot with his right heel on what looked to be an open net, but Fighting Scots defender David Egeler (Danbury, Conn.) was able to slide over just in the nick of time right on top of the goal line and kick it away for the save.
Gordon would tack on an insurance goal with 8:32 left in the game, as Kellen Kasiguran (Oakwood Village, Ohio) took advantage of an MMA turnover. The ball was uncontrolled just outside of the Mariners' 18-yard box, and Kasiguran was able to settle with his left foot and let off an absolute laser that he put past a diving Perkins in the lower left-hand corner.
The 2-0 lead would hold up for the Scots, as that ended up being the final score.
Both teams ended with 10 shots for the game, with Gordon keeper Hardy collecting his first complete game shutout.
Evan Crocker, Kellen Kasiguran, Kevin Payne and Hardy were all named to the All-Tournament Team. Crocker was named MVP of the tournament after two huge goals against Husson on Friday night.
Gordon is back at home on Tuesday night when they host UMass-Boston on the turf. The match will be played under the Brigham lights at 7:00 p.m.
