Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Beavers Outlast Field Hockey, 5-1

WENHAM, Mass.—A flurry of scoring in the final 15 minutes pushed Babson College past Gordon at the Brigham Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon. Five different Beavers scored in the game for a 5-1 win over the Scots to bring Babson to .500 on the season. Gordon falls to 10-8 on the year.

The Beavers controlled the early possession and put up two shots off of penalty corners in the first eight minutes. Staci Swallow's (South Portland, Maine) shots were both pushed wide of net to keep things scoreless.

Gordon registered its first attempt at net in the 12th minute when Courtney Scott (Herndon, Pa.) got an open look, but the senior pushed it too far wide of the goal. Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H.) had another open look for the Scots off a penalty corner, but Babson keeper Kayla Costa (Watertown, Mass.) deflected the attempt away from danger.

The Fighting Scots kept up the pressure over the next six minutes, with shots by Karli Weiss (Perkasie, Pa.) and Scott. It was Scott who finally broke through the Babson defense in the 19th minute for her ninth goal of the season. Hawkins found Scott in front of the Babson net and Scott was able to nick it past Costa for the 1-0 advantage.

Babson answered in the 26th minute on a goal by Julie Mortimer (Spencer, Mass.) with Caroline Malone (Walpole, Mass.) assisting on the play. Gordon outshot the Beavers 5-3 in the first half, but the two teams went to halftime tied at one goal.

Scoring opportunities were scarce over the first 20 minutes of the second half, with each team only registering one saved attempt during that span. Malone had an opportunity to give the Beavers their first lead of the game in the 54th minute on a penalty stroke attempt. Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) made the save on the play for the Scots, but the stop didn't shift momentum. Instead, the Beavers went on an offensive tear over the final 14 minutes of play, starting with a goal by Nicole Smith (Barrington, R.I.) in the 56th minute.

Just three minutes later, Kelsi McDougle (Hopedale, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season on a dish from Corinne Urisko (Princeton, N.J.) to make it 3-1. Babson earned another penalty corner in the 61st minute and the Beavers made the Fighting Scots pay with a goal by Megan Jones (Essex, Mass.) to push the lead to three goals.

Babson (9-9) added another score in the 64th minute, when leading scorer Malone put home a pass from Swallow. The four-goal run lasted only eight minutes and change, but it was all the Beavers needed to bring home their ninth win of the season.

Costa made four saves in the win, while Hicks drops to 10-8 and finished with two saves. Karli-An Gilbert (Scarborough, Maine) also pitched in a defensive save for the Scots.
Babson outshot Gordon 8-1 in the final period and 11-6 overall for the game, locking down the Scots in the second half. Babson earned 11 penalty corners to Gordon's five.

The Beavers return home for a non-conference matchup with Union College on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Gordon finishes the season with two CCC games, starting with a game at Western New England on Wednesday. If all goes right, Gordon will have a chance to play for the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CCC tournament at Endicott next Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
