Seahawks Pulls Even in Second Half for 1-1 Draw

NEWPORT, R.I.—Aaron Terjanian (West Chester, Pa.) scored in the ninth minute, but that was all the Gordon offense could muster in a 1-1 draw at host Salve Regina University, the first deadlock of the season for both teams. Gordon (13-3-1; 6-1-1 CCC) remains atop the standings in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) while Salve Regina (7-8-1; 4-3-1 CCC) slipped into a tie for third with Roger Williams University.

The Seahawks hold the tiebreak advantage over the Hawks, with a 3-1 victory in Bristol two weeks ago, and Roger Williams travels to Gordon for its final regular season game on Wednesday.

Gordon took the early first half lead in this contest with a through pass from Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.), the conference's leading scorer (11 goals, 2 assists, 24 points), to his sophomore classmate Terjanian who got ahead of the Seahawk defense and left-footed the ball past Salve Regina keeper Daniel Stern (King's Park, N.Y.). Terjanian tallied for the third time this season and developed what looked like what be a strong day for the Fighting Scots in the offensive third.

Play got more physical following the Terjanian goal, with both Cole and Salve Regina's Issa Demirgioglu (Smithfield, R.I.) issued verbal warnings, but no cards assessed.

With the 1-0 lead into the break, Gordon held the advantage in corner kick opportunities, 7-2, and outshot the host school as well, 9-4. Switching sides aided the Seahawk cause in the second half with the prevailing wind at Stern's back.

Nolan Brady put the equalizer on the board for the Seahawks in the 54th minute; he converted a feed from senior Jake Weinshank (Chapel Hill, N.C.) after finding space just outside the top of the box on the left side. Brady barely gave him enough room to get the turnaround shot off, but the perfect strike rose into the right corner of the net, giving Gordon keeper Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) no shot at the save.

Corner kicks were nearly even in the second half, 5-4 in favor of Gordon. Both schools had corner kick opportunities in the overtimes (2-1 Gordon) when attacking the north end goal. The Fighting Scots outshot the Seahawks 21-12, but only seven attempts were put on frame as Salve kept extra defenders back to help slow down Gordon's attack.

Stern finished with six saves for Salve Regina while the Gordon sophomore, Spoonhour stopped three Seahawk shots. The Scots, whose one league loss came at home against second-place Nichols College (5-1-2 CCC), needs a win against Roger Williams to secure the top spot in the standings for the conference playoffs starting next Saturday.

The game marked the first tie since Coach Derek Potteiger took over the program as the beginning of the 2013 season. The Fighting Scots had been 32-6 leading up to today's game since the start of last year.
