Gulls Complete Comeback Over Scots with Late Goal

WENHAM, Mass.—The Endicott Women's Soccer team spoiled Homecoming for the Gordon Fighting Scots by overcoming a one-goal deficit with two goals in the final 25 minutes of regulation. Gordon fed off the energy of the packed Quad in the first half, but the patience of the Gulls' attack in the final period presented several opportunities of which they were able to finish in a 2-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory.

The energy was there from the outset as the Fighting Scots channeled the thoughts of long-time head coach Marc Whitehouse, who missed the weekend's festivities due to a health concern. The phrase "for Coach" was uttered between the Gordon players in the first half, as the team looked to gain the early momentum. The Fighting Scots registered five of the first six shots in the game, but it was the Gulls who garnered the first close call of the match in the 21st minute. Jessica Joseph (Bedford, N.H.) chipped a ball just high of the crossbar from 20 yards out and the score remained even.

Gordon quickly countered to its offensive end and earned a corner kick in the 25th minute. Freshman Kaelyn Silveira (Bristol, R.I.) took the free kick, bending it around the fray in front of goal before the ball hit the inside of the far post and kicked in for the improbable goal. The unconventional score was the first of Silveria's young career.

The Fighting Scots held onto their one-goal lead at halftime and led the Gulls 8-5 in shots during the first half.

Momentum began to shift in the beginning stages of the second half as the Gordon defense tried to endure wave after wave of Endicott attacks. Gordon keeper McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) made a few big saves early in the period to preserve Gordon's narrow advantage. With time beginning to wind down on the Gulls' chances, they capitalized on a breakdown in communication on the back end with a goal by Rebecca Litwin (Westborough, Mass.). Litwin got behind the defense and finished a feed from Hannah Schneidenbach (Charlestown, R.I.) for the equalizer.

Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.) took a clear look at the net in the 66th minute, just following the Endicott goal, but it was saved by Endicott keeper Katie Donnelly (Madison, Conn.).

With less than 10 minutes remaining on the clock, Endicott got its final good chance of regulation. Schneidenbach took the ball inside the 18-yard box herself and went high above Dion for the game-winner. Gordon's Taylor McSherry (Wolcott, Conn.) got ahold of a ball in the waning minutes, but Donnelly came up big with the game-saving deflection. The Endicott keeper finished with six saves in the win.

Endicott improves to 6-2-3 (2-1-1 CCC) on the season, while Gordon falls to 7-4 on the season and has now dropped back-to-back games for the first time in 2014. The Fighting Scots play another North Shore Cup matchup on Thursday when they play host to Salem State at 3:30 p.m.
