Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Rebounds for North Shore Cup Split

WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Women's Soccer claimed a North Shore Cup victory over Salem State with a pair of goals in the second half on a sunny Thursday afternoon at the Quad. The Fighting Scots fended off a non-stop Vikings' attack in the first half and Taylor McSherry (Wolcott, Conn.) scored the game-winner just two minutes into the second half in a 2-0 victory.

The two evenly matched squads began the game by trading barbs on each other's offensive ends. Salem State registered the first two shots of the game, including an open look just outside the 18-yard box by Allison Celia (Hopkinton, Mass.) that was saved by Gordon's McKenzie Dion (No. Grafton, Mass.).

Gordon (8-4) flipped the field in the 12th minute when McSherry sent a cross from right to left that was headed on goal by Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.). Breton's quick header didn't fool Rachel Ledbetter (Dracut, Mass.) to the near post, as Ledbetter punched it away temporarily. Kaelyn Silveira (Bristol, R.I.) corralled the loose ball and sent another shot on the Salem goal but once again Ledbetter was there for the save.

Salem State (4-3-3) looked like they would have a chance to put one on the board in the middle of the half when a striker caught Dion coming too far off her post. Sammi Morren (Caledonia, Mich.) and Kaitlyn Hawn (Woodbury, Minn.) were able to cover up the goal and knock away the break before a shot was taken on target. Gordon countered quickly the other way and McSherry got behind the last defender for a one-on-one with the keeper but the ball got caught too far in front of her.

The Vikings held a slight six to five edge in shots in the first half, but the two teams remained scoreless at the break. Dion had four first half saves while Ledbetter picked up three.

Gordon changed the tide of the match in the 47th minute when Hannah Midwinter (Barkhamsted, Conn.) broke away down the left side, unleashed a low ball across the face of the goal and found McSherry for the redirect on goal. Ledbetter couldn't catch up to the volley and Gordon took a 1-0 lead.

Salem State had several opportunities on free kicks by Kelly Birchmore (Swampscott, Mass.), but all barely missed their mark to keep the Vikings scoreless. Gordon's Breton also had a close call in the 76th minute on a laser from 25 yards out, but the shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and was cleared away from goal. The Fighting Scots then upped their lead just three minutes later on a penalty kick score by Kara Dry (Madison, Conn.).

The Vikings outshot the Fighting Scots 12-11 in the game and each had one corner kick. Ledbetter had four saves in the loss, while Dion picked up her seventh clean sheet of the season with six saves.

Salem State stays on the road on Saturday with a MASCAC matchup with Westfield State at 3 p.m. Gordon returns to Commonwealth Coast Conference action versus Nichols on the same day at noon.
