ROCHESTER, N.Y.— Early foul trouble led to a 15-point first-half deficit and a late rally fell short as the Gordon Men's Basketball team fell to host Rochester University 72-55 in the opener of the Chuck Resler Tournament on Friday night.
Senior Kevin Sheehy scored a game-high 18 points (12-14 FT) while adding in 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals while junior Dylan Peretz added a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards to lift the Yellowjackets (2-0).
With 6:38 left in the first half, Rochester held a slim 23-21 lead before rolling out a 16-3 run to close the first half. Heading into the break, UR would lead 39-24. Over the course of the run, Sheehy would pour in seven straight points with Peretz adding in five and Tyler Sankes chipping in four. Sankes would finish with 13 points and eight boards for the Jackets.
During that stretch, Rochester's defense buckled down, allowing Gordon to shoot just 1-9 from the field and commit five turnovers.
After scoring the opening bucket of the second half, Gordon would get back in the game going on a 14-5 run over seven minutes to cut the UR lead to eight at 46-38. However, Rochester was able to rebuild its lead over the final 12 minutes while Gordon struggled to find any consistency on the offensive end.
The Yellowjackets as a team would shoot just 32% (19-59) from the floor, but made up for it at the line where they made 28-36 shots. Gordon went to the line just seven times during the game, making four. The drastically slanted opportunities at the charity stripe played a major factor in the contest, with the difference in points coming at the line. From the floor, the Fighting Scots shot 36% (22-61) while sinking seven 3-pointers.
Gordon had three starters in double figures, with Jaren Yang (San Francisco, Calif.) leading the way with 13 points. Sophomore Dominic Paradis (Rochester, N.H.) and Hans Miersma (Whitinsville, Mass.) added 10 points with Miersma finishing with a double-double, adding 11 rebounds. Gordon's senior forward only played nine minutes in the first half, as well as Jason Dempsey (Wallingford, Conn.) due to foul trouble. Dempsey finished with eight total points on four of six shooting.
Rochester plays Utica College in the finals of the Resler Tournament at 6 p.m. Saturday while the Fighting Scots (0-2) take on SUNY New Paltz in the third-place game at 1 p.m.
