Student Princes Edge Fighting Scots in Hilton Head

Match Results
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.—Heidelberg won the final three matches of the tie to break a 3-3 tie and picked off the Fighting Scots 6-3 in the men's opening match of their spring season. The Student Princes won close matches at third, fourth and fifth singles to pull out the narrow victory.

Zach Hall (Sugarland, Texas) and Kenny Gaudio (Miller Place N.Y.) gave Gordon the early lead in the match with a hard-fought 8-6 victory at first doubles. Heidelberg drew even with a battle of their own at second doubles, with Matt McDivitt and Tyler Flickinger combining to take out Joe Daugherty (Norfolk, Va.) and Richie Armand (Hempstead, N.Y.), 8-5.

The Scots looked to pull ahead after doubles play, but the Student Princes fought off several match points in the tiebreak to win 9-8 (9-7). Heidelberg headed into singles play with a 2-1 advantage.

Gaudio took another step closer to becoming the all-time leader in wins for the Fighting Scots by dispatching Dorian Kempf in straight sets. Heidelberg regained the lead again only moments later when Dan Driscoll figured out Daniel Dufoe (Malvern, Pa.), winning 6-2, 6-0. Hall evened the match score once again with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win at the first flight.

The remaining three matches all figured to be close and none disappointed in the entertainment department. The Student Princes crawled within one point of an overall match victory when McDivitt edged Dan Christensen (Attleboro, Mass.) 6-4, 6-3 at fifth singles.

Daugherty dropped a first-set tiebreaker 8-6 before Heidelberg's Ben Moore pulled away in the second set 6-1 to give the Student Princes their second win of the season. Armand played the closest match of the day, losing 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 9-11 to Flickinger at fourth singles.

Gordon drops their first match of the year after beating Regis during the fall season and they will look to get back on track against a talented Baldwin Wallace squad at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning. Heidelberg improves to 2-2 on the year.
