Box Score
WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Men's Lacrosse could not overcome a six-goal second period by MIT as the Engineers handed the Fighting Scots their fourth loss of the season, 12-9. Jake Martin (Watertown, Conn.) continued to flex his scoring prowess with four more goals, but MIT keeper Eric Bartell flummoxed the rest of the Gordon offense.
Ryan Utz (Rochester, N.Y.) was the first to strike only a minute and change into the first quarter. Utz was left open directly in front of the net and teammate Matt Dantona (Syosset, N.Y.) found him for the quick score. MIT returned the favor at the 10:57 mark in first quarter with a short-handed goal from Chris McPherson.
Neither team scored again in a defensive first quarter.
Harris Stolzenberg added the first of four goals on the day with an unassisted score less than a minute into the second quarter. Stolzenberg wrapped around the back of the net and whipped a shot for MIT's first lead at 2-1.
Only 30 seconds later, Roger Evans (Oxford, Pa.) evened the score with an unassisted goal. However, the Engineers scored five of the next seven goals in the period, including the completion of a hat-trick by Stolzenberg with one minute remaining in the first half. MIT led at the break, 7-4.
Martin looked to get the Scots back into contention with two quick goals at the start of the second half, cutting the Engineers' lead to one score. The Engineers responded with three goals in a two-minute span to virtually put the game out of reach. The Scots outscored MIT in the final period, but could never get within three goals to make things interesting.
Cody Greenwald made 12 saves in the losing effort, while also collecting a team high seven ground balls. Eric Bartell made several key saves in the second half for the Engineers and finished with 17 on the day. Martin now has 25 goals on the season for the Fighting Scots.
Gordon will look to end a three-game losing streak on Saturday at Salve Regina for a 4 p.m. tip.
