WENHAM, Mass.—The rain held off long enough on Saturday afternoon to see Gordon's Fighting Scots complete a two game sweep of visiting Wentworth in their 2014 home opener. The Scots record resurfaced after the successful doubleheader, improving them to 7-6 on the season and evening their CCC play to 2-2. Gordon College won the games 3-1 in game one and finished off with a thrilling 7-4 victory in the nightcap.
In the first game, Gordon's starting pitcher Scott Hall (Weymouth, Mass.) pitched impressively after a first inning jam, retiring the next six Wentworth batters in order while collecting four strikeouts.
On the other side of the rubber, Wentworth's starting pitcher Zach Bernier (North Darthmouth, Mass.) was equally controlling. Handcuffing Gordon at the plate for three innings, the freshman allowed one walk to leadoff man Eric Walker (Danvers, Mass.) to start the game before sending the next nine batters he faced back to the dugout.
Both teams finally broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning. Second baseman Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.) led of the inning for Wentworth with a double in the gap at right center. He was quickly brought home by cleanup man Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) who sent a towering fly to straight away centerfield that landed in the glove of a back pedaling Alex German (Brimfield, Ill.) before it was ruled as a dropped ball—as German slipped in a snow pile remaining on the warning track. Hall was able to limit the damage to one run with consecutive pop outs to end the inning, stranding Wentworth runners in scoring position.
The Fighting Scots wasted no time in responding to the deficit. Third baseman Jesse Amaya (South Gate, Calif.) led off the inning with a single and stolen base and was later brought home by designated hitter Dawson Tefft's (West Granby, Conn.) two-out single to right. Tefft than advanced to third on a single by Alonzo Martinez (El Paso, Texas) and scored on a balk by pitcher Zach Bernier.
The Scots cushioned their lead by adding another run off a single by Amaya in the bottom of the fifth. The 3-1 lead allowed pitcher Wes Arning (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) to take the mound in relief, completing two innings of no-run baseball that sealed Gordon's 3-1 victory over Wentworth.
Gordon's Hall completed five innings of one run ball and notched six strikeouts. An effort that secured his first win of the season, while Arning collected his first save.
In the second game, the Scots sent Roland LaPointe (Leominister, Mass.) to the mound to duel Wentworth's Ben Lewis (Middletown, R.I.). Both teams' starting pitchers left early in what proved to be an offensive game decided in the later innings.
Gordon got the scoring started with centerfielder Mark Fitzgerald (Camarillo, Calif.) doubling to bring home leadoff man Eric Walker from second. Wentworth responded with a leadoff double from power hitting Jake Mailman followed by two walks to load the bases. Two runs eventually scored on an error by Gordon shortstop Alex Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) and a sacrifice fly from Paul Dassau (Franklin, Mass.).
Wentworth's lead was quickly reclaimed by the Scots in the bottom half of the inning with RBIs from Carlos Pichardo (La Romana, Dominican Republic), Eric Walker, and Jesse Amaya. Wentworth's Ben Lewis finished the inning on the bench, replaced by Aaron Denis (Dover, N.H.), who recorded the final two outs of the inning.
Denis' relief effort was impressive, retiring eight consecutive Gordon batters, while Wentworth was able to tie the game at four runs apiece.
Gordon's Jesse Amaya brought some offense in the fifth by singling into left field to lead off the inning. Dawson Tefft was able to bring Amaya home with a two out single to center field, giving Gordon the lead for good. The Fighting Scots tacked on two more security runs behind a strong, two-inning relief appearance from Mark Fitzgerald.
Gordon College took the second game 7-4, with Matt Amore (Pequannock, N.J.) collected his first win of the season with 2.2 innings of no-run ball while Mark Fitzgerald recorded his second save of the season.
The Fighting Scots next game will be a doubleheader home against Western New England. The games will be played on Monday, March 31st at 4:30 P.M.
