Fighting Scots Rout Lancers to Extend Win Streak to Five

Box Score
WENHAM, Mass.— Gordon Women's Lacrosse continued its torrid pace to begin the season, handing non-conference Worcester State a 17-7 loss on a cold, rainy Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Scots scored 12 goals in the first half and played a possession game in the second half to roll to their fifth consecutive win.

The Scots offense rebounded after being held mostly in check on Thursday in a narrow win over Roger Williams. Stephanie Fitzgerald (Groveland, Mass.) scored just 15 seconds into the game after winning the opening draw control. Fitzgerald caught the ball out of the air and ran all the way down the field uncontested, before bouncing one past the Lancers' keeper, Lea Robichaud.

Gordon scored twice more in the next five minutes—scores from Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) and Jessica Castelline (Concord, Mass.)—to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

Caught in an early hole, Worcester State called a quick timeout to rally the troops and the move worked wonders. Worcester State's Molly Kilday scored three times in a three-minute span to even the game back up with 22 minutes to play in the first half.

However, Fitzgerald and Grinnell would combine for three consecutive goals to regain the three-goal advantage. Lancer Kalia Chase added a goal at the 20:16 mark to cut it to 6-4, but Gordon added another three goals before the halfway point in the period for a 9-4 lead.

Gordon's advantage would grow to seven goals by the halftime break on goals by Grinnell, Fitzgerald and Anna Blomberg (Simsbury, Conn.). Jane Dietrich (West Hartford, Conn.) and Anna Rourke (Hamilton, Mass.) also added goals in the first half for the Scots.

The goal scoring was much slower in the second half, as Gordon looked to run down the clock on its opponents. The Scots scored five of the first six goals of the second half before Chase added a goal late for a final score of 17-7.

The Scots improve to 7-1 on the season, while the Lancers fall to 4-2. Danielle Maguire played a majority of the game for Gordon, picking up her seventh win with three saves. Julianne Kirkpatrick (Rochester, N.Y.) also spent time between the pipes for the Scots and made four saves. Robichaud drops her second game of the year, but made eight saves to keep the damage at minimum.

Four Gordon players finished with at least three goals with Fitzgerald and Castelline each netting four. Blomberg and Grinnell picked up hat-tricks for the high-powered offense. Fitzgerald also flexed her muscles in draw controls, winning 10 on the afternoon.

Gordon remains at home with an April Fools' Day matchup with conference rival Curry at 7 p.m. Worcester State moves into conference play when they matchup with Bridgewater State on April 5.
