Scots Fall Just Short Against Non-Conference JWU

Match Results Coming Soon
WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Men's Tennis fell behind after doubles play against non-conference foe Johnson & Wales and couldn't claw all the way back in a narrow 5-4 loss. Zach Hall (Sugar Land, Texas) and Kenny Gaudio (Miller Place, N.Y.) won in both singles and doubles play, but the Wildcats won two of the final three matches to steal the victory.

JWU found its rhythm in doubles, taking both the second and third spots. Jake McGuire and Jason Chavenson combined to take down Richie Armand (Hempstead, N.Y.) and Joe Daugherty (Norfolk, Va.), 8-3, at second doubles. Jorge Mancebo and Adam Beady, followed suit with a complete 8-2 showing at third.

The Scots got a point back when Hall and Gaudio pulled out all the stops in a dominant 8-3 at the first flight. The duo fell behind 3-2 in the match, but went on a furious six-game run to hand Andre Barbero and Nick Auffret their second loss of the season.

The two schools split the first two singles matches. Hall turned on the jets after losing two games early in the first set and won handily, 6-2, 6-0 over Barbero. The Wildcats regained the lead when Mancebo dispatched Dan Christensen (Attleboro, Mass.) in straight sets.

Gaudio pulled the match even once again with a near-perfect showing at second singles. The senior captain dropped one game in each set and won his ninth singles match of the season. Once again the Wildcats countered with a straight-set win of their own, with Daugherty falling 6-1, 6-3 at third singles.

Armand fended off a rally from Beady at fourth singles to bring the match even at four points apiece and only one spot left to be decided. Daniel Alvarado (Bedford, N.H.) lost a heartbreaking first set in a tiebreaker before McGuire pulled away in the second set, 6-2, to clinch the triumph for the Wildcats.

Gordon gets a much-needed day of rest on Friday before heading to Springfield to take on the Golden Bears of Western New England on Saturday afternoon.
