Box Score WENHAM, Mass.—An explosive second quarter helped Wentworth Men's Lacrosse overcome a four-goal deficit, handing the host Gordon Fighting Scots a 15-12 loss on Senior Night. The Scots led 4-0 early in the first quarter, but the Leopards chipped away thanks to big nights from Steve Glover (Marstons Mills, Mass.) and Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) to pull away in the second half.
The Fighting Scots carried plenty of momentum into the game after a thrilling overtime victory at UNE on Wednesday evening. Their enthusiasm showed in the early going, as Jordan Heckelmann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) placed one into the twine on a pass from Matt Dantona (Syosset, N.Y.) at the 12:22 mark in the first quarter.
Not even 30 seconds later, the Scots' offense was at it again on an unassisted goal by Ryan Utz (Rochester, N.Y.). Utz wrapped around the back of the net and ripped a shot that skipped past Leopards' keeper Jared Proulx (Nashua, N.H.) for a 2-0 lead.
The Scots (7-7, 3-3 CCC) made it 3-0 in the game's eighth minute off the stick of Heckelmann for the second time. Utz threaded a pass to his fellow attackman, who took one step and placed a ball past Proulx.
At the 5:56 mark, Jake Martin (Watertown, Conn.) got into the action with an unassisted score from the left side. Martin came into the game as one of the top 10 goal-scorers in the country with 40 goals. He would finish with four more by the end of the contest.
Wentworth (6-6, 3-3 CCC) reeled in Gordon's ever-growing momentum on a goal by long pole James Caldwell (New Milford, Conn.). The sophomore raised his stick over his head and flicked the ball into the net while he passed by the Scots' keeper Cody Greenwald (Albany, N.Y.). The Leopards capitalized on a man-up situation when Michael Cushera (Waltham, Mass.) took a pass from Coakley for his 15
th goal of the year.
The Scots' once big lead evaporated even further at the beginning of the second quarter with a quick strike from Cushera—once again resulting directly from a Gordon penalty.
Gordon tried to regain control on Jake Martin's second goal of the game midway through the second period. However, the Leopards had much different ideas.
Glover and Coakley (2 goals) combined for three scores in a one-minute span to sudden shift the game fully into the Leopards' favor. Gordon would never lead again. Chris Kipp (Scarborough, Maine) added his fifth goal of the season with just over a minute remaining in the half to give Wentworth the 7-5 halftime advantage.
Each team scored five goals in the third quarter in what equated to a seesaw battle between the schools. Every time one team scored, the other was quick to answer with a goal of its own to keep the game from swinging too far one way.
The Fighting Scots cut Wentworth's lead down to 13-12 with 6:08 remaining in regulation on a diving goal by Sam Spellman (Lewes, Del.), but the Leopards clenched down on defense in the closing minutes. Wentworth scored two goals in the final five minutes to end Gordon's thoughts of sending the game into overtime.
Glover and Coakley was the story for the Leopards, combining for nine of the Leopards' 15 scores. Coakley had a game-high seven points thanks to three assists to go with his four goals. Alec Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) also had a great game for the Leopards with a goal and four dimes.
Proulx made 14 saves to earn his sixth win, while Greenwald took the loss despite making 17 stops.
Heckelmann and Martin both totaled four goals for the Scots, while Spellman turned in his first multi-goal game of the season. Peter Kovacevic (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won 19-of-29 face-offs and wrangled in a game-high 13 groundballs for the Fighting Scots.
Wentworth continues with its non-conference slate on Tuesday at home against Salve Regina. Gordon has three days until its next game with Nichols on Tuesday evening as well.
