Women's Lacrosse Shuts Down Nichols, 13-5

Box Score
WENHAM, Mass.—Senior Anna Blomberg (Simsbury, Conn.) scored five goals to lead the Fighting Scots to a start-to-finish victory over the visiting Bison of Nichols College. The Scots led by as many as six in the first half and closed out the Bison in the second half to net their sixth conference win of the season, 13-5.

Gordon's Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) scored right out of the gate on a quick-twitch pass from Stephanie Fitzgerald (Groveland, Mass.). Grinnell caught the ball and released it into the net in a split second to give the Scots a 1-0 just 30 seconds into regulation. The ladies in blue added another goal less than a minute later on an unassisted strike from Jessica Castelline (Concord, Mass.).

The Fighting Scots took a 3-0 edge in the third minute on a free-position goal by senior Fitzgerald, her 32nd score of the year.

Nichols' got a goal back on a free-position goal from Alyssa Bufis (Linden, N.J.) The junior midfielder provided much of the Bison offense on the afternoon.

Gordon broke away from the Bison with another three-goal run, including Blomberg's first two strikes of the day. The Fighting Scots senior broke the all-time goal record on Saturday against Wentworth and wasn't about to slow down with conference playoff positioning still undecided.

Bufis scored two more goals in the first half, with goals by Castelline and Blomberg sandwiched in between. Nichols' midfielder Sam MacMillan (Bridgewater, Mass.) added another score for the Bison to make it a 9-4 game at halftime in favor of Gordon.

After the Scots solidified their hefty lead, neither team was able to score for a 20-minute span that stretched across both halves. Grinnell ended the scoreless streak with 22 minutes remaining in regulation on a feed from Blomberg.

Gordon outscored the Bison, 3-2, the rest of the way for the end result of 13-5. Blomberg added her fourth and fifth goals of the day in the final 12 minutes to bring her career total to 206 goals. Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) also tallied a goal for the Scots to aid their third consecutive victory of at least eight goals.

Katherine Cotton (Kennebunk, Maine) made 13 saves in the loss for the Bison. Along with posting a hat-trick, Bufis also led the team with three groundballs and three draw control wins.

Danielle Maguire (Braintree, Mass.) made 10 saves to notch her 11th win of the year between the pipes. Blomberg won five draw controls after taking over the duties from Fitzgerald, who was called for two dangerous shots.

The Scots close out the regular season with a game at Western New England next Wednesday. The Golden Bears beat Endicott on Tuesday afternoon, which muddies the playoff picture at the top of the CCC standings. Nichols stays on the road at Curry on Thursday, which could be a play-in game for next week's CCC playoffs.
