Box Score 2 WENHAM, Mass.—Western New England staved off a seventh-inning rally in game one and pulled away from the Scots in game two to complete a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday afternoon. Gordon scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but fell just short of the comeback 6-5. The Golden Bears couldn't miss at the plate in game two, handing Gordon an 8-1 loss to stay undefeated in Commonwealth Coast Conference play.
The Golden Bears played small ball from the very first inning with leadoff batter Scott Hubener (Mendon, Mass.) singling through the hole on the right side. Hubener immediately stole second base to put pressure on Gordon starter Ryan Block (Egg Harbor, N.J.). Another single and a hit batter loaded the bases with no outs in the inning.
Block hindered the Golden Bears' thoughts of a big inning by forcing Steve Buckley (Monroe, Conn.) into a 6-4-3 double play, although the first run did score on the play. The sophomore pitcher stuck out the sixth batter he faced to get out of the inning without any more damage on the scoreboard.
Western New England's patience at the plate paid off in the top of the third inning, loading the bases on three walks with two outs. Block was injured in the midst of the jam and handed over pitching duties to freshman Matt Amore (Pequannock, N.J.). Amore took a few batters to get adjusted, walking home a run and allowing a RBI single to Kyle Maglio (Glastonbury, Conn.) to push WNE's lead to three.
The Golden Bears tacked on three more runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, opening a 6-0 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Down to their last at-bats of the game, Gordon's offense came alive.
Eric Walker (Danvers, Mass.) earned a lead-off walk and subsequently stole second uncontested. Jesse Amaya (South Gate, Calif.) reached base on a hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch from closer Nick Salerno (Essex Junction, Vt.) advanced both runners into scoring position with no outs.
After Travis Pullen (Las Vegas, Nev.) grounded out to the pitcher, Mark Fitzgerald (Camarillo, Calif.) walked to load the bases. Salerno struggled to find his control and walked in the first run of the game for the Scots to earn a RBI for Dawson Tefft (West Granby, Conn.). Alonzo Martinez (El Paso, Texas) launched a ball into the right field corner—which was caught—but Amaya tagged from third base to plate the Scots' second run.
Shortstop Alex Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) stepped to the plate as Gordon's last chance and delivered with the opportunity, blasting a ball to the right-center gap for a RBI-double.
Carlos Pichardo (Dominican Republic) pinch-hit in the eighth spot to try and continue the Scots' rally. Pichardo hit a sinking fastball down the left-field line, quickly tailing away from the Golden Bears' defender. However, the outfielder was able to catch up the ball to snag the ball for an instant before dropping the final out. The error cleared the bases and brought the Fighting Scots within a single run of tying the game.
Western New England ended any thoughts of extra innings, as Brian Mazella (Windsor, Conn.) got Cody Davey (Plymouth, Mass.) to ground out to the mound to end the threat. Golden Bears' starter Brendan Nugent got into the win column for the first time, improving to 1-3. Block dropped to 2-2 for Gordon.
Game Two The nightcap was all Golden Bears from the get go. Buckley got the offense started in the top of the first with a RBI single to score Jeff Schult (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) from second.
Western New England tacked on four more runs in the top of the second inning thanks to a variety of errors committed in the field. Chris Casey (Milford, Mass.) led of the inning by reaching on a fielding error and quickly scored on back-to-back singles.
Gordon walked the bases loaded, which haunted them on the next play when a pitch got to the backstop to score another run. The Golden Bears increased their lead to five runs on a two-RBI double by Steve Ambrosino (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.)
Two more runs were put on the guest linescore before the Scots were able to counter some offense of their own. Martinez and Smith singled to begin the bottom of the fifth inning before Pichardo earned a walk to load the bases. Freshman catcher Joe Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly toward the warning track in right, allowing Martinez to tag from third.
It would be the only run the Scots could manage against WNE's stable of pitchers in the second game. The Golden Bears added another run late on a sacrifice fly to notch an 8-1 victory.
Freshman Davis Vanderslice (St. Louis, Mo.) took the loss for the Scots in his first start of the year. Trevor Breton remained undefeated on the season, earning his second win for the Golden Bears.
Gordon (7-8, 2-4 CCC) goes on the road on Friday at Curry beginning at 2 p.m. The Golden Bears (7-7, 3-0 CCC) remain on the road with a tough doubleheader at Roger Williams.
