Scots Set New Wins Record on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
WENHAM, Mass.— Jesse Amaya (South Gate, Calif.) scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to give the Scots a walk-off win in game two to complete a sweep of Coast Guard. The Fighting Scots used 12 hits to win game one 8-4 before the comeback 5-4 victory in the second contest. Gordon set a new school record for wins in a season with the sweep, besting the previous mark of 16 triumphs set in 2013.

Coast Guard was the first to get on the scoreboard in game one. Gordon starter Jameson Boyd (Scottsdale, Ariz.) struggled to find the strike zone in the first inning and walked back-to-back batters with only one out. A passed ball put two runners in scoring position before a sacrifice fly by Kyle Wood (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) gave the Bears a 1-0 lead.

The Bears were back at it again in the top of the second when Cory Sonnega (Shoreline, Wash.) led off the inning getting hit by a pitch. Sonnega stole second and was eventually brought around to score on a double by Kyle Jackson (Lincoln, R.I.). Jackson tried to stretch the hit into triple, but the relay by Alonzo Martinez (El Paso, Texas) was able to get him in time. Good thing for the Fighting Scots, as the next Bears' batter, Brendan McNeil (Pawcatuck, Conn.), crushed a ball over the right field fence for a solo home run.

Down 3-0, Gordon made its move in the bottom of the third. After senior Jeff Brown (Sherborn, Mass.) opened the inning with a walk, the next four Gordon batters all found gaps for base hits to score two runs without an out. With the bases loaded, the Bears got Carlos Pichardo (La Romana, D.R.) to ground into a double play—still allowing the tying run to cross the plate.

Alex Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) gave the Scots their first lead of the game with a two-out single to bring Travis Pullen (Las Vegas, Nev.) home from third.

The Fighting Scots added two more to their total in the fourth inning. Eric Walker (Danvers, Mass.) slapped an inning-opening double just inside the bag down the third-base line and scored on a single by Martinez. Amaya also scored in the inning on a wild pitch with the bases loaded to make it a 6-3 game in Gordon's favor.

Coast Guard chipped one run off the deficit in the top of the sixth, when they loaded the bases with two outs in the frame. Mark Behne (Clifton, Va.) came through with the clutch hit to bring it to 6-4. Gordon added two more scores in the bottom half of the inning on RBI's by Smith and Alex German (Brimfield, Ill.) to put enough distance between the two teams.

Eric Proulx (Charlton, Mass.) came in to retire the Bears in order to clinch the Scots' record-setting 17th win of the season, 8-4. Boyd earned his first collegiate win, while Coast Guard pitcher Andrew Lucak (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) suffered his second loss of the season in a complete-game effort.

In game two, Gordon raced out to a great start, scoring in the bottom of the first inning on a single by Mark Fitzgerald (Camarillo, Calif.) to score two runs.

Lukas LaPlante (Leeds, Mass.) earned a walk with the bases loaded in the top of the second inning to cut the Scots' advantage in half. Coast Guard tied the game just one batter later when a David Vanderslice (St. Louis, Mo.) pitch got away from Dominic Craig (Ashburn, Va.) to advance all runners one base. Vanderslice was able to get Hanks to groundout to second base to stave off any further damage in the inning.

The Bears circled the wagons again the top of the fourth when LaPlante hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to score Jackson from third. Hanks jabbed a pitch through the hole between third and short to plate Thompson for the two-run lead.

Gordon put runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom half of the frame to put pressure on Coast Guard starter Luke Sniatkowski (Verona, N.J.). Craig successfully stole second base on an off-speed pitch, which allowed Smith to hustle home from third to make it a 4-3 game.

Coast Guard (13-22) held that advantage heading into the final inning, but Gordon had other thoughts than a split. German led off the seventh with a single on the ground to right field. Gordon's centerfielder was pushed to second on a sacrifice bunt by Walker to put the tying run in scoring position. With Amaya at the plate, German took third base on a wild pitch, which would foreshadow what was to come for the Scots.

Amaya earned a hard-fought walk to place the winning run on base before craziness ensued. Martinez attempted a suicide squeeze to bring the speedy German in from third, but missed and caught German in a pickle. German raced toward home plate and knocked the ball free from the catcher, tagging home plate in the process to tie the game at four.

During the scrum, Amaya was able to go from first to third to put the Scots in a prime spot for the walk-off win. Their efforts would by rewarded two pitches later as Sniatkowski bounced a pitch in the dirt that skirted away to the backstop to bring Amaya in to score.

Proulx earned the win in one inning of work, his first of the season. Sniatkowski took the unlucky loss and fell to 2-2 in his freshman campaign. The Bears outhit Gordon 8 to 4 in the game, but three wild pitches and a passed ball proved to be huge for the Fighting Scots.

Gordon improves to 18-12 on the season, its first 18-win season in program history. The Fighting Scots are back in action tomorrow at Endicott, pending weather, for a noon first pitch.
