Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – Gordon Men's Lacrosse saw their 2014 campaign come to a close with a tough road loss at Roger Williams in the first round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference playoffs. The Fighting Scots found themselves on the wrong end of a 15-5 halftime score and could never recover in the final two periods in a 22-11 loss to the Hawks. Gordon ends the season at 8-9.
The Fighting Scots came out quickly to take the early lead by an unassisted goal from Ryan Utz (Rochester, N.Y.). The Hawks' Will Siefert (Duxbury, Mass.) answered back, ending the Scouts' lead. After a few moves to get around the goal, Utz was able to beat his defender and regain the lead for the Scots. Siefert pushed his offense forward and created space in the center of the field for another Hawks' goal.
As the momentum began to build, Nick Gagnon (Milton, Mass.), Tim Kelly (Ridgefield, Conn.), John Mills (Cohasset, Mass.) and Siefert helped to stretch the lead by all adding an individual goal to put the Hawks up 6-2.
With a little miscommunication from the Hawks' defense, the Scots capitalized and were able to cause a Hawks' own goal. Mills and Kelly were not phased by this and answered right back.
To open the second quarter, Michael Pratt (Forestdale, Mass.) found a driving Mike Hanna (Somers, Conn.) which pushed the lead to five goals. Within minutes, Hanna earned the team another goal after driving the perimeter and beating the Scouts' goalie in the upper right corner.
A centered Thor Rasmussen (Fairfax, Va.) found the back of the net to give the Scots their fourth goal of the game. RWU's Todd Carson (Pennington, N.J.) also added into the scoring game giving the Hawks a 12-4 edge.
Two big assists came from Hanna, who dished to Siefert who defeated his defender and to a driving Max Cammerota (Redding, Conn.) who eased in two other goal. Gordon finally answered back adding the fifth goal from Roger Evans. This goal did not stop the Hawks' attack. A two goal run brought the Hawks to a 15-5 lead. Kelly, assisted from Mills, worked in a scoop shot into the lower corner, while Mills cut middle and ended with a spin move to the net. Kelly, later, added another tally as he circled around the goal beating his defenders ending the second quarter.
With a big lead, Kelly continued to increase it with an unassisted goal to open the third quarter, while Patrick Connolly (Wantagh, N.Y.) drove towards the center of the field and was dished by Mills. Key passing in the backfield allowed for Mills again finding Kelly wide open in center field to add to the Hawks' lead.
Gordon found a weak spot in RWU's defense after a few substitutions from Roger in the fourth quarter. Four unanswered goals from Evans, Matt Dantona (Syosset, N.Y.), Jordan Heckelmann (Colorado Springs, Colo.), and Utz cut the lead to 18-9 forcing the Hawks' to call a timeout.
The Hawks were able to regroup and stop Gordon's run with Cameron Signorelli (Albany, N.Y.) chipping in for another goal. A few minutes later, Utz continued to put pressure on the Hawks defense resulting in two more goals on the day. RWU's Doug Brown (Goldens Bridge, N.Y.) found a driving Connolly ending the fourth quarter.
Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) stopped 6 shots in the win and Conner Carroll (Madison, Conn.) saved 5 attempts in relief. Cody Greenwald (Albany, N.Y.) had 5 saves in the loss and Brain Lane (Rochester, N.Y.) stopped a shot as well.
