Box Score 2 WESTON, Mass.—The Gordon Women's Volleyball squad went 1-1 on day one of the Regis Pride Invitational, earning a win over conference foe Eastern Nazarene in the first match of the year. The Fighting Scots split their matches on the day after a 3-1 loss to a strong MIT side.
Gordon College earned their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Eastern Nazarene College during the first matchup on court two of the 2014 Pride Invite. Laura Schmidt (Stuart, Fla.) racked up 13 kills and Jessica Burdick (Brewerton, N.Y.) registered 12 kills of her own in the contest. Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio.) had six service aces and Joy Kimmel (Madison, Conn. had a game-high 34 assists. Burdick and Risma also led Gordon's defense with 14 digs apiece.
The Fighting Scots dropped the first set 22-25, but the rebounded nicely with three strong sets to take the match from their conference rival. Gordon took the second set 25-17, before narrowly escaping 25-22 and 25-23 in the third and fourth sets respectively.
Eastern Nazarene was led by Joanna Joseph (Brockton, Mass.) who had a team-high 14 kills and five service aces. Lauryl Berger (Laurel, Del.) led the Lions defense with 11 digs and Hannah Welsh (Derry, N.H.) added 21 assists.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology beat the Fighting Scots 3-1 in the second match of the evening to earn their first win of the season and of the 2014 Pride Invitational during the second matchup on court two. Megan Gebhard (Howell, Mich.) led the Engineers with 11 kills and also added a dig and a block. Alli Davanzo (St. Johns, Fla.) also contributed 10 kills, two blocks and a service ace. Nicole Gagnier (Atlanta, Ga.) led MIT with a game-high 31 assists while adding two kills and seven digs. Lisette Tellez (Miami, Fla.) contributed on defense with a team-high 11 digs while also adding two kills, a service ace and an assist.
Contributing for the Fighting Scots on offense was Schmidt, who landed a team-high nine kills and also added a dig and a block. Burdick had an all-around game adding eight kills, six digs and two service aces. Risma had a game-high 16 digs for the Gordon defense, while also adding two assists. Also contributing for the Fighting Scots was Kimmel who logged a team-high 27 assists while also adding four digs, three service aces and one kill.
The Engineers got ahead early with two big 25-16 wins in the first two sets, but the Fighting Scots showed some resolve by socking MIT in the mouth with a 25-21 third set. Gordon battled the Engineers once again in the fourth set, but MIT had just enough to pull away in the end for the 25-21 clincher.
Gordon will matchup with WPI at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning, one of two undefeated teams remaining after the first day of the tournament.
