Box Score YORK, Pa. – Down two starters, Gordon struggled to find the back of the goal on day one of the York College Field Hockey Classic. Host York College (Pa.) received four goals from freshmen and shutout the Fighting Scots 5-0 in the season opener for both teams.
Nearly 29 minutes into the first half, York (1-0) got on the board first as freshman Ali Posey (Airville, Pa./Red Lion) tallied her first career goal in her first collegiate game. Posey maneuvered her way past the defense on the right side of the circle and finished to the right side of the cage.
Just over six minutes after the Posey goal, the Spartans tallied another score as freshman Autumn Mallory (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) also scored in her first collegiate game. Mallory was assisted on the play by senior Nancy Saylor (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) who redirected a pass from the top of the circle right to the stick of Mallory who finished from the middle.
At the end of one half of play, York held a 2-0 lead over Gordon (0-1), with a 9-4 shot advantage and a 4-1 lead in penalty corners.
The second half went much like the first as Mallory tallied her second score of the game on a beautifully executed reverse sweep shot. Posey also tacked on a second goal of her own as she was called upon to execute a penalty stroke and did so successfully.
The Spartans closed out the game with a late goal by junior Holly Martin (Hanover, Pa./South Western) to extend the lead to the eventual final score of 5-0. Martin scored when she poked in her own rebound after her initial shot was saved and the goalie could not recover in time to stop Martin's second effort.
Four of the five goals scored by the Spartans occurred within 10 minutes of the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half, a stretch where the Scots were unable to keep them out of their zone.
Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Everett (Windsor, Pa./Red Lion) earned her first collegiate start as picked up her first career win and shutout with a two-save performance. Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) had a good day in goal despite taking the loss for the Scots. Hicks stopped 11 shots on the day, only allowing five despite the Spartans peppering the Gordon defense with 27 shot attempts.
Gordon will look to rebound tomorrow evening when they take on Stevenson University on day two of the York Field Hockey Classic.
